Atlas Martin is an ordinary teenager living on a small ranch in rural Garland Montana. His single mother works hard to make ends meet, and the light of his life is the beautiful Mae Cooper. Atlas is trying to scrape together his college tuition and is willing to take any job to earn it. His biggest concern is leaving Mae behind in the process.
When he is offered a job at a remote ranch on the outskirts of town, Atlas jumps at the opportunity. But there have been disturbing rumors about the disappearance of the ranch owners wife more than 20 years ago. Did the rancher, Pike Shepherd, murder his wife and get away with it? Atlas needs the money so he dismisses the rumor, and at first, all seems normal. But strange happenings arouse his suspicions, and soon Atlas stumbles across evidence that was supposedly buried forever.
A chilling night on the ranch with the menacing Pike Shepherd leaves Atlas fearing for his life... and the life of those he loves most.

What a great summer thriller for readers who are looking for a suspense-filled adventure featuring an unexpected hero - Atlas Martin. This college bound young man is revealed to readers through the relationships he holds dearest - he is the only child of a mother who is forced to raise her son after her husband's tragic suicide. Atlas is also developing a romantic relationship with his life-long friend, Mae. The dialog scenes between Atlas and the two women in his life draw readers into a desire to see him overcome life's many challenges. Garland County is a very believable, yet unexpected mystery that reveals many hidden secrets about Atlas and the family, friends and neighbors that I felt like I really wanted to know more about at the end of the story. I can see how the author would have a great deal more to share about Atlas in the years (books) to come.
