A kingdom in need of its king...
For years, the people of Aquina have been crushed under the hand of King Lorcan. Gone are the times of peace and prosperity they appreciated under deposed king Varic Khalon, who vanished the night Lorcan took power. Most believe him dead. Only one man knows the truth.
A man in need of redemption...
Stripped of his magic and imprisoned, Varic never thought to see his kingdom again. But a twist of dark fate secures his freedom and he returns to the city he loves. Now calling himself Gavril, he finds himself with no home, no magic, no subjects, and no hope of reclaiming the throne, forced to survive any way he can. Until a chance encounter brings him face to face with the one person who may tip the scales in his favor.
The woman who will unite the two...
Shyla de Aven has a single magical gift. She can sense magic in others. Not a very useful talent in a city where everyone has magical abilities. When a wounded stranger literally stumbles into her, he presents her with a mystery she feels compelled to solve. He proclaims to have no magic, yet she senses it locked far away. Determined to find the answer, Shyla helps the man. Only to discover they are far more connected than she realizes. And if the people of Aquina want their king returned, she will have to discover the key to unlocking his true power, all without losing her heart in the process.

My kind of hero and heroine! It’s been one of those lucky months when everything I read has been absolutely amazing and this story was so much better than I could have imagined. Actually, better falls short, beyond extraordinarily GREAT is more like it! Gavrin is a tortured hero that feels he’s not worthy of his title and the woman he loves due to his past mistakes. His pain can be felt through his actions and his thoughts and his redemption is so well received by all, including the reader. His beloved is Shyla de Aven, she has the gift of sensing magic in other people and can feel all there is to know about Gavrin from the beginning. Even though there is a physical attraction (who wouldn't be attracted to him, mind you) Gavrin makes sure she sees the man before she actually feels any kind of deeper feelings. That is something I love about my heroes! Shyla is kind of innocent and lots of noble but strong and knows what she wants and knows how to get it, even if very subtly. Yes for independent women =D Aurrora crafted a story of love between the two perfectly well without rushing into anything and without sacrificing the rest of the story. I loved how each character fell into place at the right moment and the right place. Even those that at the beginning I thought would-be villains proved to be strong characters in their own right. I dived into it expecting a fantasy novel but was gladly surprised that it went further beyond that and encounter a story with some historical notions, somewhere in a magical land in the Middle East, where kings and harems collide. Magic has a huge part in the whole but the actual world where the adventure takes place is so unique I felt part of it from all the detailing. This is a story all lovers of fantasy and perhaps historicals will need to try. ++ I received a copy of this story in exchange for an honest review ++
Varic Ayele Gavril Khalon was the King of the magically kingdom of Aquina. He was raised in a loving home, inherited the throne from his dad, harness his abracadabraNESS to become the strongest in the land, was spoiled with the endless women of his harem & was a fair & just ruler, but everything changed as he was betrayed, on his bday, by his most trusted advisor, Lorcan, had his magic stripped, sorcererly in prisoner & tortured for years. Varic the King died that day, but when he miraculous escaped & traveled back to the black arts ensnared & tax poor Aquina, Gavril the beggar was born. Gavril felt unworthy & just wanted to survive his endless starvation & keep a honorable job. Shyla de Aven was used & abused by men all her life. Sold to a neighboring kingdom's harem by her father, where she met King Varic on his b'day, experienced her first & only kiss of gut wrenching passion, watched as he is captured, lead away in chains, tossed a coin by Lorcan, kicked until she accepted it, then lose her virginity to a court toad & fled the palace for the sake of her heart. Shyla met & was taken in by the kind hearted Dianthe & her mom & savings all her coins to open her own clothing shop. She was never blessed with any abracadabraNESS of her own like all the citizens of Aquina, but she could always sense magic in others. One day as Gavril is fleeing the palace's Captain of the Guard, he enters a shop & slams into the arms of an angel & all Shyla sees is a dirty, smelly & shaggy man, but feels his smothered magic & craves to unravel his supernatural mystery. She hides him from the nosey Captain & shows him his first touch of human kindness! Shyla gives him a much needed bath, new clothes, dinner & a place to rest his head! Gavril is determined to pay her back by feeding her donkey, fixing her roof & protected her as she visits her friendly neighborhood Sorcerer, Mared. They both fight their desires for 1 another, him because he doesn't feel worthy, her because she is dirty & used, but sometimes a web of seduction is just to powerful to NOT be caught in! What Gavril doesn't know is that she wants Mared to help him with his enslaved powers & she doesn't know that Mared was his dad's trusted advisor & Gavril's teacher of all things hocus-pocus. Mared encourages Gavril to grab Shyla & devour her, able to lock some of Gavril's magic, tells others' dirty little secrets & tries to convinces them both that they need each other to survive their shared future! With truths out in the open, Gavril pushed her away, Shyla can't let him go & both are willing to sacrifice themselves for the other. Now back in Aquina, ruthless & magic stealing Lorcan learns that Varic has escaped his prison, but nothing will stop his plans for more power, but with Gavril's powers back in full force, enemies becoming allies, old friends united to fight evil, magically mayhem is unleashed & 2 lovers are willing to surrender all to save the other. How will Gavril defeat the evil Lorcan? Does Shyla forfeit her own heart for her King? Can a Aquina except a ordinary queen? Will Gavril embrace his King Varic to get his queen? When will they realize that love only makes them stronger? Who is the next King to become enchanted by his lady love? This is my 1st Ms. St. James romance & she WHAMMIED me with her magically world of honorable & worthy Kings' looking for their perfect mates. Shyla was a great heroine, who may of been treated like dirt to be scrapped of others' shoes, but had true compassion for all & always gave until she was on empty. I wish all folks could read her story & see that compassion is a must & be GIFTED to all. Gavril was the better man than King Varic & he learned it the hard way, but was always deep down a hero at heart. Ms. St. James weaved these great h/h a hard & difficult journey, but in my humble opinion all worthy love stories need a heart wrenching quest! Both Shyla & Gavril always seem to see only the worst, but they didn't let the ugliness inside their hearts & souls & that is an almost impossible string NOT to allow one to be wrapped up in! Now let's chat about the wand popping scenes & what a formidable, large & worthy WOODY wand it was! There were silky sarong (a no UNDIES tale) dissolving kisses, sensual wizardry moves & buckets of hocus-pocus water to quench the SNAP, CRACKLE & FOREST FIRE! Ms. St. James had the whole "I am not worthy" theme, but she had her heroine taking it to the extreme & that was a twisted that I usually encounter with most rogues, so I enjoyed the role reversal! Ms. St. James doesn't just write a fabulous tale, but casts a powerful spell to compel her readers to turn each incredible page that are filled with worthy characters, wrongs being righted, throws in scenes of magically mayhem, good verses evil with evil getting its a$$ royal served up & 2 lost souls searching for their itsy bitsy light & WANTING to grab it & never let go, so Ms. St. James gets my top score of 5 fingers up & 10 toes for this abracadabra rollercoaster ride! An author ARC given for my honest review.
Fantastic! Aurrora St James is a new writer for me. I really enjoyed her novel Gavril of Aquina! Ms. St. James is a talented storyteller; the story was well written with a touch of magic. I loved her main characters Shyla and Gravil. I won't write a complete review because others have done it; but I have to recommend this beautiful story. I was hooked from the 1st page and it kept my interest until the end.
