This will be a good introduction for younger people wishing to learn about the birth of gay culture in the United States. Extremely fluid, readable, sexy and mesmerizing, Kaiser has a wonderful relation to the material he writes about. My only complaints: not as comprehensive as I had expected it to be ('And the Band Played On''s depictions of some of the same eras are more striking and fully rounded) and, although the book promised a history from 'coast to coast,' it's depections of gay life are almost wholly New York-centric. A satisfying and worthwhile read, nonetheless.
