A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER IN HARDCOVER. Cordelia Naismith Vorkosigan returns to the planet that changed her destiny.

FUTURE TENSE

Three years after her famous husband’s death, Cordelia Vorkosigan, widowed Vicereine of Sergyar, stands ready to spin her life in a new direction. Oliver Jole, Admiral of the Sergyar Fleet, finds himself caught up in her web of plans in ways he’d never imagined, bringing him to an unexpected crossroads in his career.

Meanwhile, Miles Vorkosigan, one of Emperor Gregor’s key investigators, this time dispatches himself on a mission of inquiry, into a mystery he never anticipated—his own mother.

Plans, wills, and expectations collide in this sparkling science fiction novel, as the impact of galactic technology on the range of the possible changes all the old rules, and Miles learns that not only is the future not what he expects, neither is the past.

Is there life after Aral Vorkosigan? The latest book in this space opera takes place on Sergyar three years after Aral's death. Cordelia's romance brings out some of what was going on with his parents while Miles was causing havoc elsewhere in the galaxy. These revelations are actually believable based upon details from the earliest books in the series. Kudos to LMB for that! This book is heavy on references to earlier books so I would definately recommend reading some of the others first. It's an enjoyable "where are they now" for fans of the many relationships we've seen along the way. I didn't give it 5 stars because I think some of the others are better, and I felt that the personal issues here were already covered, if not in quite so much depth.

This book is a complete divergence from the prior series books. It focuses entirely on interpersonal family relationships and not on fixing a problem or figuring out a mystery. It also portrays Aral as a dishonorable cheat that would go behind his wife's back. We already knew he was bisexual but the revelations in this book are subpar. Not one of her greater works.

Disappointing offering from my favorite author in the genre. There should be a warning label to tell you that NOTHING HAPPENS. This should have been a short epilogue to a proper novel in the Vorkosigan universe.

This is nothing but a cheesy Romance Novel. No action, intrigue, mystery, or derring-do of any sort. I'm a longtime fan of Bujold and rate her other vorkosigan books at 4 or 5. The only reason I even finished the book was because I kept hoping something dramatic would happen. Alas, my hope was cruelly crushed. Looking forward to her next novel being a lot more exciting, ( like her previous novels.

My goodness can that woman write! No matter what genre, writing a good story is about people and no one does it better than Lois.

Cordelia always said she wondered what her next role would be. So great to see what my role model is up to now. Definitely can tell LMB is the child of an engineer!

A delightful read for me

I love the Vorkosigan books, but this one is disappointing. Lethargic and dull, and changes a beloved matriarch into a bit of a nymphomaniac. Please, I didn’t want to hear about Cordelia’s and Aral’s love life! Nowhere near as much fun as A Civil Campaign.

Cordelia shines in this novel, centered around a thought provoking reflection of love, committment and how we survive its loss.

May Ms. Bujold live long and continue to enjoy writing. We will all be better for it.

Cordelia has always been my favorite character. Glad to see her story continue!

After a fantastic set of stories, some shorter, some longer, I was looking forward to the post-Aral world. Sadly, much as I appreciate every other short story and novel in the arc, this latest offering would be in the nature of an afterbirth as opposed to a live birth. I imagine an agent saying "you have to finish another novel to complete your contract!" Because based on Ms. McMaster's writing until this point, this is truly lacking in drama, suspense, and progression of the universe. The humor, subtle and toned down, is there. As are the personalities of Cordelia and Miles. Just as Tom Clancy went from developer people to 2D characters, the named characters in this novel pay formulaic homage to their previous incarnations. Ekaterin is a non-entity. Miles is a small (sorry) pile of personality quirks. The chapters meander, and it wasn't until about 2/3 of the way through that I realized that this novel was Going Nowhere. I read it to the end, and appreciated some of the character and scene vignettes, but essentially this was all cutting floor material, not the stuff of which good novels are made. I will be first in line to buy the next McMaster novel -- she's stored a large credit in my bank. But if you're considering buying a novel in the series, please, PLEASE skip this one. It will Not End Well.

I thoroughly enjoyed this bookend and "closure" to Cordelia's story.

Corelia's private life is delved into revealing the compromises made to allow two complex people to remain true to themselves while attaining their dreams. Of course, the course of true love can never remain smooth. The richness of the plot and her masterful writing style are typical of Bujold and are the reasons why I always eagerly await her books.
