Overview

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new, sexy standalone novel.

Growing up, the three of us were friends.
He was the nerd.
I was the playboy.
She was the beauty.

Deep down, I only ever wanted her. I kept it inside because Rory and I made a pact that our friend, Amber, was off-limits.

He lied.

I went off to college, and he got the girl.
Amber never knew how I felt.
They were together for years--before he broke her heart.

Through it all and across the miles, she and I casually stayed in touch.
When my job sent me to Boston for a three-month contract position, Amber let me stay in her spare room.

Still reeling from her breakup, she'd sworn off men.
One night, I opened her computer to find the shock of my life. She'd hesitantly contacted a male escort company. Afraid to date and get her heart broken again, she was looking for sex with no strings.
Every emotion imaginable ran through me: protectiveness, jealousy--curiosity.
Amber had chosen Gentleman Number Nine and sent him a message.
She opened up to him, confessing, among other things, her physical attraction to her friend--me. But she considered me off-limits--and she thought I was a manwhore. (Ironic, considering the circumstances.)

Eventually, she set up a date to meet Gentleman Nine at a hotel.
When she showed up several nights later to meet him, she was stunned to see me standing there--with an offer I hoped she wouldn't refuse.

This might be the best Penelope Ward book I've ever read. I laughed, I cried, and breathed a sigh of relief at the end. I could not get enough of Channing. He was such a "guy" with his back-and-forth feelings about who he loved, who he could trust, etc. And his feelings about the potential pregnancy -- well, I don't want to give anything away, but I cried for him. Penelope must have crawled inside some guy's brain and resided there for a while. Good job! This is one of the most well-written books I've ever read. The characters are deeply developed and the plot is real -- people get hurt, people fall in love. It's so good!

Another amazing story from one of my must-read authors. The only thing missing is more - more epilogues, more Channing, more "I can't get anything done until I find out what happens next." Just read it - you know you want to - I promise you'll love it!

I liked this book but maybe not quite as much as I had hoped that I would. I am not going to lie - the cover of this book is what got my attention. I would bet that cover model has grabbed the attention of more than a few individuals over the years so I feel no shame. I had not tried Penelope Ward's writing before but I do love the narrating pair of Andi Arndt and Sebastian York so when I saw this book on sale, I grabbed it. I found myself in the mood for something light so I decided to give this one a try and I did end up enjoying the story. This book has a little bit of everything worked into the story. It is a friends to lovers story with the let's be roommates twist. There is a love triangle thrown into the book before everything was over. Plus there is a cute kitten because kittens make romances even better. Throw in a little friends with benefits action and you have pretty much summed up this book. Don't get me wrong. I liked this book but I think it was just way too predictable. I just didn't feel like there was a much that was new or original. Amber has been friends with Channing for years. Growing up it was always Amber, Channing, and Rory. Amber and Rory dated for 9 years but have recently broken up and when Channing needs a place to stay in town, he calls Amber. Channing has secretly wanted Amber for years but Rory got the girl and he didn't interfere. But now that they are no longer together, all bets are off. I liked Amber and Channing. They were both great people and I felt like they deserved each other. They did have a lot of chemistry and it was pretty obvious early on that they had some pretty strong feelings for each other. There were a few bumps in the road but it was fun to watch them find their happily ever after. I thought that Andi Arndt and Sebastian York did a fantastic job with the narration. I really think that their voices work really well together in this kind of book. They both do a great job with a variety of voices and are very pleasant to listen to. I probably liked this book just a bit more because I decided to listen to it. I would recommend this book to others. I would have liked for a less predictable story but the one that I got was perfectly pleasant. I wouldn't hesitate to read more from Penelope Ward.

Amber Walton was best friends Lainey Lord. When Lainey unexpectedly dies, Amber starts hanging around her brother Channing and his friend Rory Calhoun. They become the best of friends bonding over the tragedy. Channing and Rory make a pact that neither of them will make a move on Amber. When Channing leaves to go away to college, Rory makes his move. Rory and Amber end up dating for 9 years until he breaks her heart because he needs a break. Enter Channing. Channing hears the news and quickly calls Amber. He also has a favor to ask...can he rent her extra room at her place for a few months for a temp contractor job he just got. Amber hesitantly agrees. Problem is, she has always had a crush on Channing! What she doesn't know is that Channing has always wanted her! When Channing finds Amber's laptop open he sees that she has contacted a male escort service for a sex with no strings type of night. She also sees that Amber has admitted that she is attracted to Channing. This causes Channing to make believe like he is the Gentleman Nine Amber wants to hook up with. She has a list of things she wants to try and Channing can't wait! When Amber goes to meet Gentleman Nine, she runs into Channing. He convinces her to do those things with him instead. Of course, over the time they spend together, they start to realize there is more to their relationship than just sex. I loved this book and couldn't put it down! I really enjoyed these two characters too. They both deserved a happy ever after even if they had to wait a really long time for it. The ending was so perfect....and a big tearjerker!

I have never read a book by Penelope Ward that I did not like, and Gentleman Nine was no exception. Three friends Channing, Rory, and Amber the playboy, the nerd and the beauty. Amber was best friends with Channings sister, Lainey while Rory and Channing were best friends. These three friends have a lot of history between them, but unexpected things happened that sent Channing off to college and when he came back Rory and Amber were together, Rory had broken their pact that Amber was off limits for both of them. When Channing got the opportunity to go to Boston for three months, he accepted the offer and ended up being Amber's roommate since her and Rory had recently split. Channing has no idea that Amber has feelings for him, until she confesses to Gentleman Nine and this opens all kinds of possibilities for the two of them. You have to read this book, it is funny, sad, romantic and passionate. It is loaded with secondary characters that will steal your heart and you won't be able to stop yourself from falling in love with them. The story line with Channing's mom is so sad yet heartwarming, and I felt like the author did a great job handling that part. And I cannot forget Kitty, that little fella sure knew a good thing when he found it!!

Penelope Ward never fails me. Every book I’ve read of hers, I always love. Her stories and characters are always relatable.

I usually love Penelope Ward's books but this one was a bit disappointing. I liked Amber and Channing. I was drawn to the premise of the story, but somehow the story fell flat for me. Everything seemed to be forced, nothing that was done or said was natural. The conversations were all forced and cliche. It was very strange. Even the twist with Rory was weird. I would of never guessed this was written by Penelope Ward.

Channing needs a place to stay for some months due to his job. So he calls Amber. They have been friends since they were kids,so why not? Well, probably because he is very hot. Or because Amber has just broken with her boyfriend after nine years and she is devastated. And probably because she has always had a crush on Channing. To make things worse, Amber's ex, Rory, used to be Channing's friend. The two boys liked her when they were teens. And they made a pact. They couldn't pursue her. But when Channing came back home from college he found out that Rory had broken their pact. So now, Amber and Channing are living together as friends, although both of them want more. I don't really want to say much more because there are some twists than were totally unexpected. So much happens that I don't know how to describe how I felt. But I do know that I loved every single word. I was not sure of what was going to happen until the very end. And having Rory's point of view made the story even more surprising.

Channing & Amber for the win! Their story of childhood friends reconnecting as adults was a pleasure to read. Channing had me cracking up as soon as he was introduced and I could relate to why Amber was smitten with him. And yes that cover is the perfect image of who Channing is. Also I am a sucker for a good looking man in a Beanie. Who isn't right? Oh & he can cook & is a wonderful listener and again he is totally hot! Loved the friendships, the heartache, the angst, the love, and the sexiness that this story brought. Wasn't expecting the twists of both Amber & Channing's past and present. This book will keep you entertained and fall in love with being in love.

SUPERB! This book has all the feels of a great romance novel. The characters endearing, the story heartfelt and unputadowable! A friends to lovers gem. Top favorite of 2018! “I may not have been your first love, but you’re mine.”

I LOVE Penelope's books! The reason I love her books, this one absolutely included, is the characters. These are like real people. They act like real people and talk like real people. And they blessedly don't get tangled up in the whole "well, I should tell him the truth, but I won't" nonsense that lasts the whole book. Yes, there is a little of that in this one, but the truth is revealed in a very timely manner. I'm a total sucker for couples that have a shared history, and Channing and Amber certainly do. It was VERY interesting with an added element that popped back up about halfway through the book. Won't spoil it for you ;) Yep; another SMOKING HOT and AWESOME story from Penelope! (I received a copy of this book in consideration of an honest review)

Life can throw curve balls at you. We have all seen it happen when we watch it happen to other people. What Channing and Amber don't count on in Penelope Ward's new outstanding book, GENTLEMAN NINE, is that it was about to happen to them! Channing and Amber knew each other when they were young. Growing up aware of each other, they had no idea what they would mean to each other in the future. Amber is a gentle soul with a big heart, who is always rooting for the underdog and underprivileged. Amber is their champion and is happy to be that person, but after some heartbreak she realizes she is ready for more out of life. Some adventure. Some romance. Some passion! So she makes a plan to bring more excitement and zing into her world! Channing is a cool, confident man, haunted by his past and looking for a redemptive future. Charming Channing and Amber end up in the same place at the same time and set an incredible friendship in motion, in part picking up from where they left off and in part being carried by the sparks that are constantly being shared between them. In fact, they get so carried away in how good being together feels, that they begin to see their lives through a haze and try to navigate their connection on top of the obstacles in their paths, looking ahead to a happy tomorrow. Gentleman Nine has all the elements of a great romantic story! Fate, bravery, trust, devotion, friendship, humor and love all shine in this latest great work from my favorite, Penelope Ward! Kudos!

This is going to be a difficult review. Spoiler free, oh hell so difficult when i want to shout from the roof tops !!! Amber & Channing, best friends, both have had heartbreak and devastation in their lives, Amber’s one and only boyfriend was the other guy in their friendship trio, but are recently broken up when Channing comes to stay with Amber for an extended stay due to work. Oh my heart was chuckling with joy at this couple. Both just totally captivated me, Channing, hot, sexy, charming and someone you would definitely want to be around. Amber a girl with her confidence broken but still shone!! Well holy moly but the chemistry between these two had me squirming in my seat, and i couldn’t wait to get from page to page. I loved getting bits of both POV’S because seeing both sides to this couple just pulls your heart right in to the depths of romance heaven. My emotions were haywire with this book, because i just couldn’t predict where it was going, what was coming next, or how it was going to end!!! When I’m shouting at the pages, when I want to shake the characters bones till they rattle and when I am so engrossed in a story i don’t even know what time of day it is, now that is something i just don’t get with every book, but this author gives it in spades!! This is definitely my most favorite of Friends to Lovers Books I have read and this is possibly one of this authors Best Books. I so want to tell you what happens, but you will have to read it !!! lol

Gentleman Nine by Penelope Ward is the latest standalone romance by one of my absolute must-read favorite authors. A sexy and funny friends-to-lover romance that also has the surprising mix of angst and emotional turmoil that made these characters MORE. More real, more dimensional, more relatable, just MORE. Told in dual POV, this book was a devour-in-one-sitting, page-turner, addictive story between Channing and Amber. Amber has crushed on Channing for as long as she can remember. He was her best friends brother. When her best friend dies in a tragic accident at 16, Channing and Amber found solace in each other and their own friendship blossomed while they were learning to deal with their loss. Channing has always liked Amber. He has been drawn to her for as long as he can remember. When she ended up dating their other best friend Rory while he was away at college he learned to keep his distance, physically and emotionally. While never actually shutting hr out, he distanced himself from the pain of seeing them together, even though Rory knew Channing liked her and they had a pact to never act on their feelings. Shortly after Rory and Amber split, Channing finds himself on assignment in Boston and rooming with Amber. Their friendship resurfaces and gets complicated fast. The emotion and angst in this book was phenomenal. Every word, every sentence just flowed so perfectly from the page. An absolute pleasure to read. Note, while their is an inkling of a love-triangle hidden in the pages of this story, it is not a hurtful one, if that makes any sense. I cannot stand love-triangles - I really detest them and will avoid books that have them. This one was so delicately and carefully approached and handled with such care to ALL of the characters it wasn't an issue for me. Enjoy!
