Children's Literature - Beverly Melasi
The body is like a machine that needs to be used often to keep it working. Keeping fit helps the body look and feel good. An active body helps build strong bones and muscles. Without them, the body would be as wobbly as jelly. Strong muscles are less likely to get injured and can work for longer periods of time. The heart is also a muscle. Doing activities that make the body work hard is great for the heart. A healthy, balanced diet keeps the body active. Carbohydrates are necessary for energy, and come from fruits, vegetables, and foods made from grains such as bread, pasta and rice. The body also needs protein found in chicken or fish, and dairy foods such as cheese and milk. Fatty and sugary foods such as French fries and candy should be eaten in small amounts. The body is about two-thirds water, so it is good to drink about eight glasses a day, especially during exercising to protect the body from dehydration. Safety is required for every exercise, so warming up and cooling down are essential to deter muscles strain. Colorful pictures capture the reader, and show them how being active helps the body. Different exercises to try are also suggested. Reviewer: Beverly Melasi
