Introduction: The Really Good News About Getting Pregnant
When I was in medical school in the 1960s, the birth control pill was the prescription of the decade. Indeed, young men and women were far more concerned with avoiding pregnancy than with getting pregnant. Happily, this is no longer the case. Today, getting pregnant is something more and more couples view as a joyous life-expanding experience to be celebrated and cherished. And, too, we have seen the "birth" of the single mother, with many women choosing to honor the alarm on their biological clock by becoming mothers whether or not they have a suitable mate in mind.
Fortunately, along with these changes in our attitude about pregnancy came some equally important scientific advances that made it faster and easier for all women to get pregnant, and for most couples to achieve their parenting goals.
- New information about both male and female biology has given us ways to encourage not only faster but healthier conceptions, with fewer chances for miscarriage and birth defects.
- Discoveries concerning the cause of infertility have given us new ways for men and women to protect their childbearing ability as well as their sexual vitality while they safely postpone childbearing.
- Outstanding advances in nutritional therapy have given us new ways to harness the power of vitamins and minerals and in the process helped us not only reduce the risk of birth defects but also protect and even increase fertility, in both men and women.
- Stellar progress made in the treatment of infertility itself including powerful new medications, new forms of microsurgery, and brand-new laboratory-assisted procedures has not only allowed more previously infertile couples to get pregnant, but has given us new ways that even parents over age thirty-five can have a safer, healthier pregnancy.
In fact, thanks to what we have learned in the past several years alone, almost every woman who wants to have a baby can have one!
Why I Wrote This Book
Although the field of reproductive medicine continues to explode with new advances, my deep commitment to fertility research goes back several decades. As a member of several key scientific teams I have devoted thousands of hours to reproductive research, and my work has taken me around the world more than three times, to the capitals of Europe where the first "test tube" baby was conceived, to Russia, South America, and the Far East anywhere I could learn the latest information on the reproductive system. Beginning in 1990, I joined forces with a team of dedicated physicians and researchers to create a medical center specifically to deal with infertility problems. As a result I have been able to see, firsthand, the exciting, almost miraculous ways in which the field of reproductive medicine has continued to grow, and how it can and does change peoples lives.
- Couples who were thought to be hopelessly infertile are now able to conceive and deliver not just one, but two and three perfect children.
- Those who previously miscarried up to fifteen times are now giving birth to healthy, full-term babies.
- Women who thought they were "too old" to have a baby are now giving birth to wonderful, beautiful children. Even those women who reach menopause prematurely in their mid-forties, for example have brand-new options for having a baby of their own.
Time and again my colleagues and I have witnessed a dramatic rise in the number of our fertility patients who are able to have all-natural conceptions and healthy pregnancies just by making a few simple dietary and lifestyle changes.
As astounding and important as these advances were, as I traveled the country giving lectures and making television appearances, I began to see that too many couples were still not taking advantage of all the possibilities. My colleague and coauthor Colette Bouchez, an award-winning and respected medical journalist and researcher, began to see the same thing, even among her sophisticated urban readers. While we both did our best to bring much of the good news about reproductive medicine to the public, we could see that too often, too many couples were still "in the dark" about all of their options. While some, certainly, had the basic information about such procedures as in vitro fertilization and artificial insemination, both Colette and I were continually amazed at how few people were informed about the really dramatic advances. Indeed, even many physicians were not aware of some of the great and relatively easy new fertility procedures that we knew could change people's lives.
Thus, we conceived the idea for this book a resource and a guide to the newest, most important fertility information available today, data that has made and will continue to make a significant difference in people's lives. It is our hope that this book will make a difference in your life as well.
Part One: How the New Discoveries Can Help You
If you are planning to have a baby in the very near future or even if you haven't yet decided when motherhood will be right for you, knowing the factors that could affect your childbearing potential will enable you to take the necessary steps to protect your reproductive options and ensure that your body remains ready for pregnancy throughout your childbearing years. My husband and I are a newly married couple and we just finished our house and I want to get pregnant soon. We have been trying for two mlnths and there is NO baby is my belly! We decided to look for books that might help and maybe you could tell me if this is a good book. I really want a little family. Also I wanted to know if anyone has gotten pregnat with the help of this book? Thank you! Please respond back to help me thank you and my name is Callie.
Not what i expected. Tought it would be better but sadly it wasnt. Dont waste your money on this. Instead read other books or just keep trying because that is better than reading this piece of crap!
When my husband and I first decided to get ready to conceive, we weren't really sure where to start [other than the obvious.] This book gave us what we needed to know for our preconception appointment, when I should start taking vitamins, if he should take them, what I should eat, etc. I certainly agree that it touches on a lot of subjects without a lot of extreme depth, but I think that is reasonable for a book that is meant to be a general overview to all the issues that surround becoming pregnant. I appreciated knowing what my risk factors were and a bit about what would happen if we had difficulty becoming pregnant. It is rather information dense, so it might not be what everyone is looking for, but I felt it was a great place to get reliable information with reasonable explanations.
It has alot of information but kinda useless. It's great on hitting different subjects but the subject you want to know about are very brief.
I have PCOS.. It is a syndrome that is more common than you think.. While I was TTC, I read many books.. This one is by far..my most favorite.. Luckily, I was able to conceive on my own without the help of drugs or special procedures.. This book put my mind more at ease on very difficult subjects.. I had no idea whether I was going to need any of the procedures or meds.. This books has just about all the info ANYONE could need.. I call it my Pregnancy Bible.. I hope it helps you..
This book nontheless is a great source of information to keep on hand. It wasn't what I expected. I expected more real life information, not so technical. As a young married woman, I wasn't expecting so much textbook information. But, I think it is something to keep on hand for future reference.
My husband and I have a modest income and could not afford fertility treatments. My sister, who is a registered dietician recommended this book and suggested I try the diet and nutrition advice. I followed the plan to a T - and after 4 months my periods became regular and 2 months later I became pregnant - after 4 years of trying! I am now in my 6th month, feeling great, and still following Dr. Lauersen's advice. If, like me, you can't afford fertility treatments, don't pass this book up. I am so thrilled to be pregnant I am telling everyone 'Buy this book' !
This book seemed to touch very little on a lot of subjects. I also didn't care for the nutrition advice in the book. While some of the advice was good, other recommendations seemed questionable and didn't appear to be based on sound research.
This book was a great read. It had so much information to give, explaining things about fertility that I had never thought to question. I was absorbed and was finished reading it in about 4 days. My husband and I are following the 6 month plan.
This book is highly recommended. Not only does it describe the basics of gynecology and what is required to conceive, it has very thorough sections on advanced reproductive technologies. What really impressed me about this book is that it seemed to have a compassionate outlook on infertility treatment. There is a section on ways to relax while you are waiting to become pregnant. This book helped me a great deal when I was feeling very frustrated and tired with the mechanical, cold treatment I received at a fertility center. (After one month, I decided to not go to the center anymore due to the stress of it all and I returned to an ob/gyn and became pregnant the next month!) The book is filled with practical advice, including diet and vitamin recommendations. This is a very well-organized book that I'd highly recommend to anyone trying to become pregnant. There are many things you can and should do before you begin to try to conceive. All is explained in this book.
I have been struggling with infertility for a number of years and have been caught up in all the medical goobly-gook , never really understanding my problem or my treatment options. But thanks to Getting Pregnant, I was able to know and understand my own fertility better, and more important, found what my doctors had NOT tried. Turns out, I wasn't infertile at all, but miscarrying early pregnancies! I got into the right treatment program , and now I am 4 months pregnant with a healthy baby. And I owe it all to what I learned from this book. Please - anyone who can't get pregnant and can't figure out why, read this book before you spend another dime on what may be useless treatments. Finding the right treatment is vital and this book will guide you to it.l Plus, it's so easy to read and understand, and very reassuring. It changed my life !
I have several of Dr. Lauersen's books, and always thought them to be the absolutely very best, and they greatly helped me to understand my body and especially endometriosis. As I now find myself in the Infertility world, I was so happy to see this new book here, purchased it, and sat down with it the minute it arrived. It was definitely not what I expected. I was very taken back at the attitude of the book, which to me, was written in a matter that was offensive to me, as an infertility patient. The book just seem to take everything in a light hearted manner. When I am getting ready to spend tens of thousands on treatments, I am not in a light hearted mood. I just want concrete medical information, and telling me to make love on my birthday just ain't cutting it.
