This book does exactly what it promises to do: gives helpful, gentle, practical advice for making it through the first thirty days. It is readable and doesn't overwhelm. The author is clearly experienced at helping get through this period.

I can't believe any one would rate this book a 1 star!! It's entire job is to help people find sobriety and recovery. And that there is more than one way to do it. Ms. Erlandson's recommendations are thorough but simple. This book works for people who have been through drug/alcoholism treatment or those who haven't. I was a counselor for thirty years and I would definitely use this book in TX for my clients.

I would highly recommend this book! The book is very straightforward and while it contains difficult and sensitive subject matter, information is presented in a way that is straight forward and easy to understand- providing support and actions to put into practice. I am a substance abuse counselor and I recommend "Getting Sober" to clients for this reason. This book lends itself to use in a therapeutic setting as clients learn to maneuver through life without alcohol. For many people the first 30 days of sobriety are the most difficult, and the author outlines ways to begin to create a solid foundation in recovery. "Getting Sober" focuses on the first 30 days of sobriety and I believe reading it would be beneficial to anyone in early recovery (as well as ongoing sobriety!) I would also recommend this book to friends and family of an addicted person as well as therapists for use with clients. In recovery circles we say that it is 'simple but not easy' and in "Getting Sober" Kelly Madigan Erlandson does a great job addressing the 'not easy' parts of early recovery while focusing on what is most important- the solution. --Hollie Urbauer, BA, LADC

I highly recommend the book, “Getting Sober,” by Kelly Madigan Erlandson, a recognized expert in addiction recovery and family issues. This is a very informative, easy to read book that describes a holistic approach to obtaining sobriety and working through the difficult phases of early recovery. Many addicts and alcoholics mistakenly believe that “I can just quit when I want to.” They don’t understand that a good and long-lasting recovery involves significant lifestyle changes. For those who do understand, the process of early recovery can be very overwhelming. Kelly does an excellent job of providing simple, step-by-step directions for taking care of one’s physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual self. I have worked in the mental health and addiction fields for 28 years and am pleased to recommend this book. It is a very useful tool for individuals pursuing abstinence and addiction recovery, their family and friends, as well as professionals. – Brenda Rohren, M.A., MFS, LIMHP, LADC, MAC (Lincoln, Nebraska)
