Overview

Ghetto Love

Taking the ghetto balladeer stance that D'Angelo postured on Brown Sugar one step further is roughneck lover man Jaheim. On the soulful first single "Could It Be," Jaheim sounds like the new-school reincarnation of Teddy Pendergrass. At the start of that song, however, the New Jersey native proves that his Tims are firmly planted in the new millennium by gruffly proclaiming, "They gonna smell me on this one nigga." Throughout Ghetto Love, the polished baritone satisfies both hip-hop soul and classic R&B fans by alternating between streetwise songs such as the tasteless "Lil' Nigga Ain't Mine," which deals with a paternity drama tailor-made for Jerry Springer, and jubilant, mid-tempo grooves such as "Happiness," on which Jaheim proudly boasts about his "ghetto queen." Although he talks tough, this thuggish crooner is really an old softy at heart.

Jaheim Hoagland's debut album entitled ''Ghetto Love'' showcases his talents in singing as well as in songs that express real life situations that he has been through. Whether trying to find that someone special in ''Looking for Love,'' going through some baby mama drama in ''Lil N*gga Ain't Mine,'' or addessing the shallow, materialistic nature of love on his single ''Could it Be,'' he sings from the heart. I have personally been a fan of his music since Nov. 2000 and I really enjoy listening to his voice and the meaning of the songs. So if you haven't heard this young man's album yet then please give it a try. And to all of the current Jaheim fans let's keep supporting this talented artist and his music.
