This book grabbed my attention from the first page. Cinnamon Cameron mentions the ghost right away. We learn that she was seeing a psychiatrist back in Boston, their hometown. Cinnamon, her father, and her kid brother are renting a big old California house for the summer. It takes awhile to find out why her mother and sister aren't with them. Cinnamon is first attracted to an old, junk-filled room with no glass in its one window. She hasn't finished cleaning it before she doesn't want to go in there again. The ghost car frightens her because no one else can hear or see it, although it scares the neighbors' dog. From Paul, the cute boy across the street, Cinnamon gets the names of two girls who lived in Georgette and Robert Rockwoods' house the previous summer and calls them. Alison Burch had no problems with the house, but Lisa Berringer -- who had stood the place for only a week -- doesn't want to talk about it. Cinnamon is sure that Lisa was haunted too, especially after Paul's little sister tells her the poem she learned from Lisa. The Pied Piper, an odd man Paul and Cinnamon meet on the beach, may have seen the ghost, but refuses to admit it.Is the ghost real or is Cinnamon going crazy? Certainly her reactions to the ghost's appearances are making her seem crazy to her family and others. The ghost is desperate. Can Cinnamon end the haunting before it wrecks her life?Michael Deas did the cover with a girl with long, reddish-brown hair who is wearing a knee-length sleeveless white dress, a white shawl, and sandals. She's got a fringed white shawl on, too. Her eyes are closed and her face is turned slightly down and to one side. There's an old-fashioned blue car with a white canvas (?) top in the background. The ghost stands in front of the car. His shirt and pants are white, his windbreaker navy blue, and his muffler is peach. A nice touch is that his scarf is being blown in the opposite direction from the girl's hair. You can see the car through him. No, he's not wearing the yachting cap the ghost wears in the book, but his hair is properly black.
