Ghost of a Chance

by Charles Wilkinson

A professor-turned-gambler's obsession with beating the game of blackjack leads him to places-both interior and exterior-he would never have conceived of going. In this dark, noirish tale of betrayal and revenge, the professor, a prison acquaintance, and a dealer with "talented" hands all concoct plots that collide in eerie violence in a nameless Nevada ghost town.

I literally read it in one sitting. Fantastic characters, refreshing idea, and dark personalities. A hard-boiled mystery/suspense novel with unpredictable twists and turns ending in the ultimate irony and betrayal. Wilkinson has his talons in you from the opening chapter. Right as you think you know where this story is headed, you find yourself in a place you've never been before. You never see it coming. This was a great read, very satisfying. It will make a great film, too. J. Madison Johnston
