Girl On The Run by Daryl Wood Gerber

When a fairytale fantasy night becomes a nightmare, Chessa Paxton must run for her life...but will the truth set her free?

Chessa Paxton, an event planner in Lake Tahoe, celebrates a successful night at the Happily Ever After Ball, but her dream quickly becomes a nightmare when she wakes up beside the body of her dead husband. Nauseous and confused, feeling as if she's been drugged, she can't explain to the sheriff why her princess costume is bloodied. With her father already a convicted murderer, she feels invisible shackles ratcheting onto her wrists and ankles. She runs! But she can't escape vivid flashes of memory: a massacre in a meadow; men and women in fairy tale costumes; Snow White's dead body shielding her from bullets.

Though Chessa is a former costumer and a master of disguise, she quickly learns that hiding while trying to prove herself innocent is the most difficult task imaginable. Especially when the sheriff wants to throw her in jail and the real killer wants to silence her forever.

Praise for GIRL ON THE RUN

The story and characters combine well. Didn't see the end coming. The character Chessa is one I hope to see more of. Only thing you won't like about this book is getting to the end because you will want to read the sequel right after it

Girl on the Run by established cozy author Daryl Wood Gerber is her debut suspense novel, and a fantastic book! It kept me constantly on the edge of my seat, reading and turning pages as fast as I could just to see what was going to happen next. I simply couldn't put it down! Our heroine, Chessa, is the title character, and on the run for her life. The pace is quick, the story filled with twists and turns, and I felt as if I was on the run right along with Chessa. The author provided an advanced readers copy for a fair and honest review. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a really great read. 5 stars for this fabulous debut! :-)

Daryl Wood Gerber, who is known for her Cookbook Nook Mystery series, has taken the plunge and wrote a thriller, for which she did a fantastic job. Anyone who likes John Grisham, Scott Turow, Steve Martini, or Joseph Finder will definitely enjoy this book. Or if you’re a fan of The Fugitive (either TV series or movie), you’ll want to give this one a read. I was drawn to this one, not only because I read the Final Sentence, the first book in the Cookbook Nook cozy series, and really enjoyed it, but it drew me in because of the fairy tale ball, and that it’s a thriller written by a woman. So many are written by men, as evident from my list in the above paragraph, that it’s wonderful to find a female author that writes Thrillers. At the ball, Chessa is already seeing things that don’t quite make sense, putting her on edge. Shortly afterwards, she wakes up next to her dead husband, and events really start moving fast. Gerber does a wonderful job keeping the tension up and the action moving. There are so many secrets, and continual threats to Chessa, that you want to keep reading to see what happens next. Besides the mystery and action scenes, Gerber has written really well developed characters. There are ones I disliked, and others, besides Chessa, that I was rooting for. There are complex family relationships, that really shine towards the end of the book. And one thing that I really enjoy about Thrillers, compared to Cozies, is that it’s often harder to figure out the bad people, and what their motives might be. Gerber did not disappoint in that regard, and had me wondering until near the end. A fantastic foray into the Thriller genre, and one I highly recommend you read.

Edge of your seat suspense in Girl On The Run by Daryl Wood Gerber Chessa has everything a job she loves, a loving husband a dream home or so she thinks. Her world turns upside down when she comes to and finds her husband dead by her and no memory of what has happened. Things go from bad to worse when party goers from the Fairytale Ball she planned are found in a meadow massacred. Chessa finds herself the #1 suspect in the murders and all she can think to do is run. She escapes and goes on the run because she has to try and remember and figure out what has happened and to prove she is innocent? Can Chessa remember what really happened before she becomes another victim? Can she find the truth all the while trying to avoid being captured by the police until she figures this all out and oh by the way is anybody or is anything she thought she knew just all been lies? All I can say is WOW. This is an action packed riveting thriller. It keeps you guessing right along with Chessa and the police. I like that it is a fast moving plot but one that is not hard to keep pace with. It is an edge of your seat page turner that draws you in and one that you won't want to put down. It has an unique spin on the murders one that has many possibilities for who done it which makes for a good read. Daryl Wood Gerber has a hit with her first suspense, one you will want to make sure you buy. order your copy today at http://www.amazon.com/Girl-Run-Daryl-Wood-Gerber-ebook/dp/B01C7T0FFG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1458937702&sr=8-1&keywords=girl+on+the+run+daryl+wood+gerber I received a copy of this book from the author for my honest opinion and review

Chessa Paxton is excited to attend the Happily Ever After Ball...an event that she helped plan and which looks to be a success. But her next memory is waking up alongside her husband's dead body, and after calling the police, realizes she can't explain what happened. Feeling like history is repeating itself, with a father sent to jail years earlier for a murder he claims not to have committed, she goes on the run. Unsure of who to trust, she tries to stay free while unraveling her disjointed memories of the previous night, and discover the real murderer. Assigned to her case, detective Marcus Newman is trying to find out what would compel this woman to commit murder...possibly multiple murders when they discover more victims who also attended the ball. Is Chessa involved or an innocent patsy? I really enjoyed this story, action packed from start to finish, with a strong female lead, and enough plot twists to keep the reader guessing. I was already a fan of this author's cozy mystery series, and this story solidifies her role in the suspense mystery category. Disclosure: I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Girl On the Run by Agatha Award-winning and bestselling author Daryl Wood Gerber is her premier venture into the realm of the suspense/thriller genre. “Be careful what you wish for, it might come true.” is an example of a powerful oxymoronic and paradoxical idea. It is as central to human thought and/or experience today as it was centuries ago. Since the beginning of civilization, people have dreamed of fame or wealth or other good fortune. Do you believe in Fairy Tales? Fairy Tale Balls? What would you do if you attended a Happily Ever After Ball and everything turned out wrong? Chessa, the lead character, wakes up after the Happily Ever After Ball in her bedroom lying next to her dead husband. Following standard procedure, the police immediately suspect Chessa killed her spouse so she sneaks out of the house and goes on the run so she can attempt to clear her name. In a tightly woven plot with many twists and turns, the dead body count quickly rises. Despite a mix of awful circumstances, Chessa is a young woman with marked resilience, fortitude and determination. As a reader, I couldn’t stop wanting to see vindication for Chessa, willing her to survive and succeed in clearing her name and reputation while, literally, on the run. This is, without a doubt, one of the best suspense novels I have ever read. You will not be able to set this book down and the ending will definitely surprise you. "Girl on the Run" skillfully combines fantasy, reality; murder, mayhem, and “can’t put the book down” reading enjoyment! Girl on the Run is a detailed chilling tale with a tangled web of National and International intrigue that is riveting. The conniving, convincing, conflicted characters face impossible choices, the tension is real and may be all too close to the truth. I was happy to read a thriller without explicit sex or vile language, yet filled with multiple, unanticipated twists and turns that keep me turning the pages! Daryl Wood Gerber’s first top-notch action suspense thriller is a must read! Full Disclosure – An advance review copy of this book was sent to me by the author in hopes I would provide an unbiased, honest review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed in this review are my own. And to be perfectly honest - I LOVED THIS book!!!!

This was awesome!!! I wish I could give it more than 5 stars... Chessa has been set up in murdering her husband, and more... She takes off to prove that she is innocent, and it may cost her her like. There is so many people that are connected and she is not sure who is behind it. With the police on her trail, she must find the killer before the killer finds her and finishes her off. This book is full of action from the very beginning and it is non-stop through the whole book. It was so hard to put down. I don't want to give any spoilers, but the end of this book caught me off guard... I did not see that coming.

Great mystery! This story kept me guessing until almost the end. Loved it! Chessa is an event planner and was celebrating a successful ball, only to start feeling sick. She wakes up the next morning with the police in her house, her husband is dead and they are blaming her. Her father had been railroaded for murder when she was a child and she didn't want the same thing to happen to her. So, she goes on the run to try to clean her name. She really isn't sure who she can trust, the police and the bad guys seem to be just one step behind her.

Girl on the Run starts out at a sprint and keeps up the pace for the entire book. I'm a big fan of the Cookbook Nook mysteries and the Cheese Shop mysteries. They are both fantastic cozy series, and I was eager to see how her writing skills translated into the suspense scene. This book hooked me from the first chapter. This book was one that was difficult to put down, I'd try to take a break and end up spending time thinking about the book and what might be happening while I was cooking dinner or taking the kids to school. That's when I know I'm hooked, when I feel like I'm missing out on the action whenever I'm not reading. If you like good suspense, please give this book a try. If you are a fan of Daryl Wood Gerber's cozy mysteries, don't be afraid to try this more suspenseful, less cozy story.

While this may Daryl Gerber's first foray into 'suspense,' I am hoping it won't be her last. This book is absolutely riveting. A true hold on to your seat suspense! Chessa wakes up after the Happily Ever After Ball in her bedroom, with her dead husband lying next to her. The police immediately suspect her and she sneaks out of the house and goes on the run to try to clear her name. The twists and turns, and dead bodies, mount up and the story just gets better and better. I absolutely could not put it down. Daryl Gerber writing is superb and ranks up there with the best suspense writers! Do yourself a favor and get this book when it comes out April 9. In fact, pre-order it as soon as you can. I was given a pre-release copy for review. It was not required that I give a positive review, but solely to express my own thoughts and opinions of this book, which I have done

Girl on the Run by Daryl Wood Gerber is a new suspense novel (her first). Chessa Paxton wakes up with the body of her dead husband in the room. There is blood everywhere and police officers. The last thing that Chessa remembers is attending The Happily Ever After Ball at the Boardwalk Casino in South Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Chessa is the assistant in charge of special events at the Boardwalk Casino and she organized this event. Chessa is attending with her husband, Zach Szabo. She remembers asking for water and then nothing. What happened to during those lost hours? Detective Tallchief (a blowhard running for mayor) believes Chessa is guilty of the crime. Detective Marcus Newman is not so sure. But then Chessa (who is confused, dazed, and still a little out of it) takes off out the bathroom window. She has no plan other than to run. Chessa does not want to be framed for a crime like her father. Chessa sets out to prove her innocence and find the real killer. Things really heat up when they find eleven other bodies in meadow who were also at the ball along with Chessa’s missing shoe. Girl on the Run is a very good debut suspense novel (the author normally writes cozy mysteries). I figured out what the twist at the end would be, but I do not think many people will see it coming (it is really good). For the most part, Girl on the Run had a fast pace (which I liked). I enjoyed the investigation as Marcus and Chessa went about solving the murders (I love getting the clues and putting them together). I especially relished the Jason Bourne reference. I give Girl on the Run 4 out of 5 stars (which means I liked it). I look forward to Daryl Wood Gerber’s next book. I received a complimentary copy of Girl on the Run from NetGalley (and the publisher) in exchange for an honest evaluation of the novel.

A must read!!!!! I couldn’t put the book down once I began reading it. The characters were believable and your heart goes out for the main character; Chessa Paxton. Who and what to believe has our characters head spinning. A fast paced complex read, with twists and turns throughout. The ending will definitely surprise you….

How could a fairy tale go so wrong? Girl on the Run drew me in quickly and did not let go until the very end. The characters are very well developed, complex, and keep you guessing, so that when you're not reading this book, you will be thinking about it. Get ready for a wild ride of twists and turns and be prepared to stay up late -- you won’t want to put down this exciting and suspenseful page turner! I received and ARC of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review ~

Girl on the Run is a suspense thriller, nail biter, rollercoaster ride that hooked me right away and I could not put it down. When Chessa's world spins out of control, she is determined to find out the truth. Daryl Wood Gerber is a phenomenal author known for her cozy mysteries. This is her first suspense novel and I hope she continues writing this genre. She has a real knack for grabbing hold of your attention, keeping you glued to the edge of your seat, anxiously waiting to see what happens next. I loved this book and wished it didn't have to end. I received a copy of this book in exchange of a fair and honest review.

This fast-paced thriller was a treat to read. The complex, layered story kept this reader's attention glued to the pages, and I loved the interesting characters, unexpected twists and turns, and sympathetic protagonist. This is definitely a book I would recommend to those who love a good thriller, or readers wanted to try a thriller for the first time.

I really liked this story! I haven't been reading suspense novels so much lately but was asked for my honest review of this one. I do like suspense but feel much safer reading cozies. But this suspense novel starts out grabbing my attention and I wanted to just keep reading it. But I had to keep breaking away for other things. I definitely recommend this suspense novel. But how would it not be good, Daryl Wood Gerber wrote it, after all! The Dedication and Acknowledgement page is also very good. I was sent a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

Chessa had the perfect marriage but suddenly it was over. She is now on the run. The police think she killed her husband but she didn't, at least she is fairly sure she didn't kill him. The last thing she remembers is drinking a bottle of water at The Happily Ever After Ball, getting sick and her husband carrying her to a van. She soon discovers there has been a mass murder and there is a large suspect list ranging from a senator (her step father) to a reverend. She needs to figure out who is responsible before it is too late. This story pulls you in on the very first page and there are many twists and turns that will keep you guessing up until the very end.
