This is a book full of great Native American folktales. The illustrations are simple but clearly show the culture and the emotions of the story. There are stories in here for all kids that will interest them and it written in a manner that teaches the culture and is fun and engaging. It allows the teacher to pick any idea they want to teach during a read aloud and gives students the freedom to explore all kinds of stories in one book. The addition of the authors note before each story is also very informative in the background to each story.

How the Drum Came to the People (Salish)--This tale is about how the drum was created and how it brings people together, it is my favorite in this book not only because this is part of my lineage (Salish) but I enjoy how they explain the sound of thunder and the regaining of their voices.

There were many interesting characters to "get acquainted with". Some of the characters were "scary", others were "lovable". Get this book and you won't regret it.
