A Girl's Life Online by Katherine Tarbox

Katherine Tarbox was thirteen when she met twenty-three-year-old "Mark" in an online chat room. A top student and nationally ranked swimmer attending an elite school in an affluent Connecticut town, Katie was also a lonely and self-conscious eighth-grader who craved the attention her workaholic parents couldn't give her. "Mark" seemed to understand her; he told her she was smart and wonderful. When they set a date to finally meet while Katie was in Texas for a swim competition, she walked into a hotel room and discovered who-and what-her cyber soul mate really was.

In A Girl's Life Online, Tarbox, now eighteen, tells her story-an eye-opening tale of one teenager's descent into the seductive world of the Internet. Tarbox's harrowing experience with her online boyfriend would affect her life for years to come and result in her becoming the first "unnamed minor" to test a federal law enacted to protect kids from online sexual predators.

In an age when a new generation is growing up online, Tarbox's memoir is a cautionary tale for the Internet Age.

A Girl's Life Online-Previously published as Katie.com Katherine Tarbox Penguin Group Non-Fiction If you like a characters view, law cases, and interesting Internet chats, A Girls Life Online is for you. This book is told by the 13 year old, small-town girl named Katie Tarbox. She gets into a chat-room online that ends up leading her into a law case that will make her, friends, teachers, and even family, turn against her. Katie is on the verge of betraying everyone she knows, until her mother dicide's to send her to a boarding school in California, far away where no one will know Katie's "mistake." It's up to Katie to keep her secret, will she feel good that nobody knows about this mishap, or will she feel awkward inside? the only way to find out is to read her story and get into her life, chapter-by-chapter! Katie's family consists of her controlling mother, neglectful step-dad David,fun-Loving sister Abby, (who is 4 years older than Katie), and a pain of a little sister named Carrie, (who is 4 years younger). There for Katie is the middle child, and enjoys being left alone. Either her mother and step Dad are thinking of collages for Abby, or they are worrying if Carrie has her lunch for school, they are never ragging Katie about anything, until Katie decides she needs attention, and oh boy... Does she get it! This book I totally recommend, falling in love with someone on the internet, was not Katie's best "8th grader" choice. She decided on a "21" year old boy named "Mark", who turn's out to be... Not what he really described, and Katie doesn't know what side to be on, her Mother's side, or truly, "Frank's" side. Now Katie has a choice, and so do you... Want to read this mind boggling book... or not?

This is an inspirational and extremely well-done book. I was surprised that a teen could write a book that would be so compelling and insightful. In fact, I think that it is fair to say that Ms. Tarbox has more insight into life than most forty year olds. She writes with wonderful clarity in a straightforward manner that doesn't leave you guessing to get her message. The message, in fact, is one that every chatroom visitor should take seriously.
