Tchaikovsky once wrote of a work by Mikhail Glinka, "The Russian symphonic school is all in Kamarinskaya, just as the whole oak is in the acorn." Indeed, the stylistic roots of the great Russian romantic and nationalist composers who would follow Glinka (1804-1857) are pervasive in this survey of his most significant orchestral works. The Overture to Ruslan and Lyudmila is an effervescent bauble for which Glinka mostly remains known, especially outside Russia, but much of his other music is equally worthy. If the ballet music from Ruslan shows little in the way of originality, "Chernomor's March" is a delight, depicting the opera's evil sorcerer-dwarf with vivid grotesquerie. Glinka is perhaps most noted for introducing Russian folk themes into concert music, especially in the Symphony on Two Russian Themes and the aforementioned Kamarinskaya. But his influences came from abroad as well. Italian bel canto suffuses the early Overture in D Major, and Spanish verve colors two of his most irresistible showpieces -- the Capriccio Brillante on the "Jota aragonesa" and the Souvenir d'une nuit d'été à Madrid -- pointing the way to Rimsky-Korsakov's later Capriccio Espagnole. Recordings of most of these works are rare, especially with the zest Vassily Sinaisky and the BBC Philharmonic bring to them. For anyone who loves Russian music, this Glinka collection is nothing short of essential.
