The Go-Getter is a book that needs to be added to every business person's essential reading list. Written in the 1920's it does not feel dated. Lessons included are applicable still today.

Peter B. Kyne (12 October 1880 – 25 November 1957) was an American novelist who wrote between 1904 and 1940. Many of his works were adapted into screenplays starting in the silent era, particularly his first novel, The Three Godfathers, which was published in 1913 and proved to be a huge success. He is credited in 110 films between 1914 and 1952. ---From Wikipedia

Although Kyne's tale of business smarts has been around for some time (it was first published by William Randolph Hearst in 1921), it doesn't feel dated. Indeed, lumber wholesaler Cappy Ricks's situation (he "had more troubles than a hen with ducklings") mirrors that of many business leaders today. It's a straightforward parable about a young war veteran who's handed an opportunity that will either make or break his career. If he accepts the job and pulls it off, he's a go-getter; if he fails, it's curtains. The kid's motto-"It shall be done"-sums up Kyne's point: even if you're unsure, say you can do it. Then figure out how to do it and make sure you succeed. Go above and beyond. The 82-year-old story gets some slight spiffing up by business book writer Axelrod (Everything I Know About Business I Learned from Monopoly), and the afterword is especially helpful in pinpointing Kyne's main ideas.

A very short parable (you can read it during your lunch hour) on how a young unemployed veteran is handed the opportunity to take his career to the top (if he succeeds) or go down in flames and ruin his career (if he fails). The book runs along the lines of the "Who Moved My Cheese" approach (though it was written in the 20's) of using a short story to explain a few very basic (though powerful) principles. This book really sums up the guiding principle of consulting: Even if you aren't sure you can do it, tell yourself that you can, figure out how to pull it off and execute (and don't give up). And above all...always go above and beyond what's expected - even if it's very painful to do so. A great little short story (though somewhat unrealistic - I don't know of any human being that would go to all of the trouble of the main character) that reminds us of what we can accomplish when our backs are against the wall and we never give up. The motto of the go-getter: It shall be done.

Digitized, but not edited for OCR errors. I didn't get through the second page before I ran into complete gibberish, causing me to pull out my physical copy.
