Overview

Go West, Young Woman! by Nancy Quinn

Have you ever found a cougar on your swing set or a moose in your driveway? Go West, Young Woman! is the true story of one family's transition from beltway living in metro Washington, D.C. to what they thought would be a "calmer" existence in rural Montana.

They soon discover how unprepared they are for the challenges ahead, both comical and adventurous. The humor of their early encounters with cattle and local customs only masks the more ominous confrontations with predators and nature. Through their journey they discover the true meaning of the "code of the West," a concept which has not entirely vanished from the American way of life.

I first heard of this book by meeting the author on Facebook during a book event. She was gracious in person and when I read her book, I knew she was genuine. Her story of the courage, trials, and joys of moving from the big city to the great vast west was brilliantly told. I loved the animals they invited into their lives. Just as much as I loved reading about the unexpected and uninvited animals that were curious about the new family on the mountain. With small children and no familiar faces, this family carved out a new life and made friends and earned the respect of their neighbors. Beautifully described and joyously shared, this story brings the modern pioneer to life. It is a book that anyone that loves the wide open spaces of the west, and the love of a close knit family will love.

Good old-fashioned storytelling. "Go West Young woman" was the most enjoyable reading experience I've had in some time. A collection of true stories about a family learning to adjust world world they've never known. Leaving the fast pace of life in the city as a wife with two children and a husband in the military, this family manages to make a home in the rugged mountains of Montana. Between blizzards and encounters with dangerous wildlife, experience the sadness of Dolly. A beautiful mare who's story stole my heart and made me cry. And the joy of getting Wilson, a horse the family grew to love as much as he loves them. Nancy Quinn has an easy flowing style of writing that gives one a sense of being there and makes you feel like you're a part of the family. Once I started reading I almost never put it down. Once I was finished I was left with a longing to go back. I am so looking forward to her upcoming Sequel and I'm hoping this becomes a series I can enjoy for years to come. I simply must have more.

This book is an amazing read about a transition from two very different life experiences – a suburban way of life, serving the military to a rural country life that challenges your co-existence with nature each day. The daunting, heartfelt transitions to living in the Mountain West are wonderfully detailed and personal. Along the way, Nancy shares with you how each challenge was met in a narrative that the reader both relates to emotionally, and also will learn from in an empowering way. The day-to-day life in Montana as experienced through her, her husband, daughters and friends not only make us laugh and cry, but reveal to us how all our joys and sorrows combined strengthen our spirit. Each hardship and challenge, met head-on in faith, can bring forth a rewarding new experience in life. Those who are unfamiliar will discover that country life demands much, yet gives so much in return!
