Gods and Goddesses of the Ancient Norse

Gods and Goddesses of the Ancient Norse

by Leonard Everett Fisher

The ancient Norse, renowned as fearless sailors and unrelenting warriors, worshiped gods who mirrored their skills and interests. These brave seafarers carried their beliefs from northern Europe across the Atlantic Ocean to Iceland, Greenland, and eventually to America. Although such beliefs have now faded away, the Norse gods and goddesses still live today in literature, music, and the days of our week.

In his latest book on mythology, Leonard Everett Fisher describes fourteen of these gods, explaining their powers, their duties, and their images. From one-eyed Odin, God of the Skies and giver of wisdom, to Freya, Goddess of Beauty, to Thor, the fierce God of War, Fisher brings the Nordic gods vividly to life. A map, bibliography, family tree, and pronunciation guide are included.
