Chapter One

God's Words of Life on Attitude

* * *

Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:2-3

As God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:12-17

Each year as a couple, Bob and I have planned a "second" honeymoon trip. Sometimes it's a short trip to a bed and breakfast close to home, and sometimes it has been a spectacular event for which we prepare quite a while. Whether it is a small get-away or an eventful memory maker, it is always a time that helps us get back our perspective as a married couple. For a few days, we shed all our responsibilities and the roles we carry from work, or as parents, and just become lovers.

When we get bogged down in the daily grind or difficulties, let us never lose the perspective that we are headed to that marvelous destination. We are journeying through this life toward the New Jerusalem to share an eternity with Jesus Christ. Bob and Rosemary Barnes

If couples could be given a vaccine against pessimistic thinking, we would probably see the divorce rate all but drop off. In a sense, you can protect your marriage against this virus. All it takes is a good shot of optimism-rising above your circumstances and maintaining hope for your future. Les and Leslie Parrott

God's Words of Life on Change

* * *

Our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body. Philippians 3:20-21

Jesus said, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me." John 14:1

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8

Devotional thought on Change

Few couples have had a more difficult beginning in their marriage than Mary and Joseph (See Matthew 1:18-25, Luke 2:1-20). First of all, she was pregnant; many may have wanted her to be stoned or at least call off the wedding. Second, Joseph's business was probably under-financed when the decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all people were to be enrolled for a new taxing. Just what a young couple needed! Can you imagine what it must have been like for a girl in her mid-teens, more than eight months pregnant, to ride on the back of a donkey? On top of all this, there was no room in the inn!

Their rough beginning continued with an announcement that all boy babies under two would be slain. There were dozens of places where this new marriage could have wavered and fallen apart. But these two good people loved God and were determined to make their love secure.
