Going Hard by Kelsey Browning

"Kelsey Browning spins a deeply emotional tale of intrigue and romance in a page-turning romantic suspense fans will gobble up."
- New York Times Bestseller Dianna Love

Slick sports agent Griffin Steele is living the highlife in Los Angeles, far from the shadow of the North Carolina mountains where he grew up. But when his hometown falls on hard times and needs his help, Grif reluctantly agrees to commute between coasts. He never expects the lush scenery, in the form of pretty tomboy Carlie Beth Parrish, to be such a temptation.

After an impetuous one-night stand with Grif Steele fifteen years ago, hardworking blacksmith Carlie Beth has tried to make a living and raise her daughter in the hometown she loves. Then, too-sexy-for-his-Rolex Grif blows back into town like the perfect storm, making Carlie feel less like a thirty-something mom and more like an infatuated teenager.

When a stalker targets Carlie Beth, Grif can't help but step in to protect her. But once he discovers the fourteen-year-old secret she's been keeping from him, will he embrace the truth or will he turn his back on Steele Ridge and Carlie Beth forever?

About the Author

USA Today bestselling author Kelsey Browning writes humorous Southern women’s fiction with a sprinkling of mystery, sexy contemporary romance, and romantic suspense. Her Georgia-set, co-authored G Team mystery series is described by readers as “The Golden Girls meet Dirty Harry.” Her single title romances garner reviews that call her writing funny, sassy, and full of sizzling chemistry.

Originally from a Texas town smaller than the ones she writes about, Kelsey has also lived in the Middle East and Los Angeles, proving she’s either adventurous or downright nuts. These days, she makes her home in northeast Georgia with her tech-savvy husband, her smart-talking son, a rescue dog from Qatar, and her (fingers crossed) future therapy pup. As someone born & raised in North Carolina, I must say this book captures the beauty & character of the western side of the state. The Steele family's loyalty, pride & sense of what's right makes me feel good. Read all of this book & you will be smiling when you finish

Wow This was wonderful. It's good to read the forest book in the series so you can understand the dynamics of the family. But the story is wonderful. Grid is back & finds out he is a dad. Callie Beth has been raising her daughter alone. Now her dad is back. Can they make it work.

The stoyline was fantastic. The book is great, but could be improved with a few adjustments. But someone needs to proofread the proofreaders and the final typist. Turn off auto-spellchecker. Drop the of local slang, it doesn't make sense to those who have not been exposed to it, previously. Drop the OVER use of the word "hell," I felt like I was reading a Smurf book, everything is "smurfy," (good, bad, or otherwise). Keep up the great writing.

It was a pretty good story. A little too much macho of the guys and too much graphic sex though.

Nice, well written, fast pace, introducing communication in a relationship... hardly founded without too much drama in other books from different writers... I really think I'm going to like this series and this new (for me) writer

My first ARC August read and we're on a really good start. While the hidden baby trope is not one of my favorites in romance books, I have to say that Browning did a great job at writing it. Now, while I don't think Carlie Beth made the right choice, I do understand where her nineteen-year-old-self was coming from. I don't agree, but I get it. All of that aside, I liked Carlie. She was funny, she was a good mother, and a good friend. Grif was an interesting hero, full of contradictions. I'm curious to see if in the next books in the series this aspect about him is explored, but he seemed like a chameleon to me. When the book starts, we meet him talking on the phone with one of his clients, and by that small interaction, I was expecting a cold, stand-offish guy. Except the more time he spent with his family, back in his hometown, the more laid-back he turned out to be, so I'd love to see him in a big city environment, just to see if somehow he becomes a different person in any way. Throughout the book there are such hilarious moments that I found it hard not to start laughing like a loon in the middle of the night, which I liked because it's been a while since my last laugh-out-loud read. The story is pretty fast paced, which is also a good thing, but I felt like the ending was a little bit abrupt. I would have wanted a "several weeks/months/whatever later" scene, but I guess that maybe we get that in the next books. I didn't expect the stalker to turn out to be who it turned out to be, which is a plus (I was completely pointing the finger at some innocent person). I would have wanted to see more bonding moments between Aubrey and Grif, but all in all I enjoyed this book and I'll definitely read the rest of the books in the series, because I need more Reid in my life, Reid being one of Grif's brothers.

It's hard to make a series flow when it's done by different authors but this group has done a terrific job. I loved the whole theme of being able to come back home and second chances in careers, life answer love.

I love this series. This book Going Hard is is the second in the series and is about Griffin Steele a Sports agent. Grif is polished, wealthy and not wanting to live in his small hometown. But brothers have a way of convincing you to do things you don't want to do, so Grif reluctantly agrees to commute between the West coast and the East coast. He sure isn't expecting to run in to a woman he had a one night stand with fifteen years ago, and absolutely was not expecting to find himself attracted to her now. Carlie Beth is not the type of woman Grif usually finds attractive, she isn't sophisticated and isn't a mode,l she is a Blacksmith, rough, tough and about as unsophisticated as you can be. So how is it that Grif can not stop thinking about her and why does he find he so hot? Carlie Beth is trying to avoid Grif Steele, the last thing she wants to do is get tangled up with him again. One night fifteen years ago was enough thank you! But oh it would be so much easier to stay away if he wasn't so good looking and sweet. She doesn't need to be involved she has a teen daughter to raise after all and no time for a man. ( Famous last words.) These two when they get together scorch up the pages. I loved this book, the story line is great, the characters are complex and very well written, the book moves along at a steady pace and will keep you turning pages. This one is not to be missed! Plus there is a big secret that you will find out about so snatch it up and block out some reading time you won't be sorry.

Kelsey Browning is an auto-read author for me and while I have my favorites of hers, Going Hard might just top them all. Maybe. Grif and Carlie Beth are great characters that pulled me into their story from the start. Grif is back in Canyon, er, Steele Ridge to help his brother Jonah out. He runs into Carlie Beth, someone he shared a pretty special night with almost 15 years before. Grif doesn’t want to stay in Steele Ridge. He wants to get back to his LA life. That is the life that made him millions of dollars and made him feel like he did something with his life. Carlie Beth is an independent mother who is doing all she can to make ends meet and raise her daughter the best way she knows how in her home town of Steele Ridge. She doesn’t expect to see Grif Steele again, but now he is here. And isn’t leaving soon enough. The chemistry between Grif and Carlie Beth is electric and hot and something neither of them can ignore. It’t quite fun to watch them explore this attraction. Browning’s romance stories always have great dialogue, some sass, and characters you fall in love with. Going Hard has an additional edge to it that we don’t usually see in her other stories which is touch of mystery and suspense. People in town are turning up dead and all things point towards Carlie Beth. Grif and his brothers will stop at nothing to figure out who is behind this. I could not put Going Hard down while reading it. It moved at a pace that had me flipping pages to find out what would happen next. In addition to the romance between Grif and Carlie Beth, as well as the mystery plot, there was the relationship between Carlie Beth’s daughter Aubrey and Grif. It was so sweet and I loved watching it unfold. There is so much going on in this story! Going Hard has it all – love, romance, family, friends, and a little mystery. Give it a read. You will love it!

I recommend reading the prequel, Steele Ridge: The Beginning, before starting out the series to get a glimpse of the relationship between the Steele siblings and hint about their past as well as their possible futures. Griff and Carlie Beth's story is sexy, sweet and a little bit suspenseful. I found it refreshing that he quick to forgive being lied to for 14 years about having a daughter. This made it easier for me to believe their relationship and feelings progressed so quickly. Griff's relationship with their daughter Aubrey is sweet, he took to being a dad pretty easily. I love the way the Steele siblings get along and are always there for each other. Can't wait to see how the other authors continue their stories. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. I was not compensated for this review, all conclusions are my own.

4.5 Stars I really enjoyed this one, It had me hooked right away. The story was engaging along with the characters. The suspenseful elements just added to the book. This is a second chance romance. One of my favorite characters is Carlie Beth's daughter. She's wise beyond her years. Grif is in one heck of a surprise when he returns home. As Grif and Carlie Beth find their way again there is a threat looming. I highly recommend this one!

Wow! This book is just plain good. Its the type of book that keeps you turning its pages even though its time to cook dinner or go to sleep. Kelsey Browning wrote such a great story, I love how vivid & interesting her characters are. They are exciting but also feel real. The story focuses on Carlie Beth & Grif, one time lovers who get a real chance at love. Inside that story there is a mystery of who is vandalizing Steele Ridge properties & hurting its people. I loved this book so much a bought the next one before I even finished this one & pre-ordered the final book in the series. Steele Ridge is a 4 series book (1 novella & 3 full length books) written by 3 authors. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

When Grif is called home to help, he is reluctant to leave behind is sports agent business. When he sees Carlie Beth again, he is reminded of their encounter 15 years ago. As he and Carlie get to know each other again, secrets come out. When she is in danger, Grif is determined to protect her. Can they get past the secrets and the danger and make something new? An amazing story of love and forgiveness. Highly recommend this book.

Griffen & Charlie have history ...more then Griffen knows but is soon to find out . Charlie has secret that is about to rock Grif's world ....people are dying and the connection is Charlie , but how and why?! Grif will do anything to keep her safe she wants him to or not . Griffin Steele is the first of four brothers we meet in the Steele Ridge series. He's the slick sports manager who's brought home by his family to help save their town of Canyon Ridge. He doesn't plan on sticking around but between some disturbing vandalism and reconnecting with the girl he hasn't forgotten in 15 years, he's torn between staying and leaving. Carlie Beth is a single mom and artist who makes ends meet as a blacksmith. She's going through a bit of a dry spell where men are concerned, but she'd rather keep her distance from former lover Griff. After all, she's never told him that he's the father of her daughter, Aubrey. Now, I don't agree with Carlie Beth keeping this information from Griff. There was no good reason for it, especially when his family lived in town and he came home at least once a year. Her excuse made her look like a martyr...and I hate people who make themselves out to be selfless when they are actually being selfish. But I can still like a character who's actions I dislike and I credit the writing by Ms. Browning for that. I also feel like the underlying mystery and danger around Carlie Beth helped to make her more sympathetic to the reader. I loved Griff, thought he was funny, super hot and totally adorable with his daughter. Might he have forgiven Carlie Beth a little too fast for the secret? Maybe. But I think he did that for Aubrey, and that's a "dad" thing to do. I loved the suspenseful aspect of the book as well as all the supporting characters. I'm especially intrigued by the other Steele brothers and look forward to their stories, too. A solid 4 star read for me from a favorite author! I received a complimentary copy of this book which I am voluntarily reviewing.
