Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Tina Hudak
This little paperback book is straightforward and obvious in both dialogue and illustrations. A little girl travels with her parents from their bucolic setting to spend the day and overnight all by herself with her grandmother. Despite the fact that this trip to the city is special, all the action is limited to the interior of the house such as playing checkers or baking. The story is basically one of following their day together and the events which are meaningful to them. The use of short sentences and repetition of phrases may make it easy to read, but without any rhyme or plot it all becomes rather dull. The illustrations mirror the text exactly and do not add any more dimension to the charactesr or the story. The pale watercolor pictures sometimes span the entire page, or are muted into a white background, or are contained within a border. This lack of any consistent style leaves a feeling of visual fragmentation. The characters, portrayed realistically, all maintain the same static smile throughout the story. The concept of a visit to grandma's house is a great one for very young readers, but unfortunately this book does not interpret it well either with the story or illustrations.
