The Golden Elephant (Rogue Angel Series #14) by Alex Archer

After risking her life to uncover a Chinese imperial seal, only to have it stolen by a cunning tomb robber, archaeologist Annja Creed feels she has endured one treasure-hunting fiasco too many. But when a mysterious collector offers a reward for a priceless golden elephant, Annja gives in. After all, there are bills to be paid, adventures to be had.

The artifact is said to be hidden in a vast and ancient temple complex in the mountainous jungles of Southeast Asia, and Annja must meet with various scholars in order to pinpoint its location. But when each expert she visits is found dead, Annja fears someone else is after the artifact.

And her. And she's probably next on the killer's list.

Annja Creed is a strong, practical, attractive woman. This series is based on extraordinary event where Annja as a scientific based archaeologist finds and places the final piece of Joan of Arc¿s sword back together and it becomes hers. This is somewhat of a conflict within Annja because her scientific archaeology side would suggest that the sword couldn¿t happen but yet it does. What I like about this series is that we don¿t get bogged down in a study of the supernatural. With this minor intrusion, it¿s all action adventure.
The ¿Golden Elephant ¿ is no exception to this. It is an action adventure aided by the materialization upon request of a sword. This adventure starts with an action remincent of ¿Indiana Jones and the Arc of the Covenant¿ as our heroine, after much effort, acquires a green jade seal which triggers a series of traps forcing her to call for help to extract herself. Help comes in the voice of a woman offering to lower a rope. Before Annja climbs, she insists that her backpack with the jade piece be extracted first. When the backpack is extracted, the rope is lowered and stops at a point were Annja can¿t get to it. It is here we are introduced to Easy Ngwenha, one of the eventual competitors for the Golden Elephant. Easy leaves and takes the jade piece with her.
Annja extracts herself from this predicament. She recuperates with one of her two mentors Roux and learns of the Golden Elephant. Roux and Garin Braden, her other mentor, are over 500 years old. This longevity is supposedly tied to sword rather than something more sinister. There is some conflict between the two and often they are at odds with how to treat Annja.
Roux convinces Annja that she needs to obtain the artifact and we the reader are off a wild internet searching, sword welding, militia fighting, primitive culture saving ride.
