Over the course of her years as a solo artist and as the guiding light of Throwing Muses, Kristin Hersh grappled with demons and visions. In her role as this trio's frontwoman, Hersh is primarily concerned with wrestling her volume knobs as far into the red zone as possible -- with breathlessly gratifying results. Alternately caustic and cathartic, Golden Ocean is rife with slashing guitars and rhythms that are barely under control. On the writhing "Bone China," Hersh and her bandmates careen through a maze of jagged riffs and sexual conflicts with decidedly X-styled agitation. The tones are just as angular on "Sally Is a Girl," but Hersh flounces through the riffs a bit more playfully, dropping pop culture hints -- Dick Van Dyke Show references abound -- like breadcrumbs along a freshly blazed trail. While there's a punkish edge to a number of the disc's tunes -- the stop-start "Clara Bow," for instance, all but demands shouting along -- Golden Ocean also has its more expansive moments, such as the trippy, tangled "El Dorado." Once upon a time, the Buzzcocks planted their tongues firmly in their cheeks as they sneered that "noise annoys"; that phrase doesn't appear anywhere on Golden Ocean, but the sentiment -- and love of the hard stuff -- is clearly the same.
