Overview

The Golden Spiders (Nero Wolfe Series) by Rex Stout

Nero Wolfe was almost as famous for his wealthy clients and extravagant fees as for his genius at detection. So why has he accepted a case for $4.30? And why have the last two people to hire him been ruthlessly murdered? Wolfe suspects the answers may lie in the story of a twelve-year-old boy who turns up at the door of his West Thirty-fifth Street brownstone. In short order, Wolfe finds himself confronted by one of his most perplexing and pressing cases, involving a curious set of clues: a gray Cadillac, a mysterious woman, and a pair of earrings shaped like spiders dipped in gold. The case is all boiling down to a strange taste of greed—and a grumpy gourmand’s unappeasable appetite for truth.

I love all the Nero Wolfe novels by Rex Stout, but I re-read this one with a little sadness. A young boy dies and no one but his mother seems to care, and she will spend the rest of her life without him. And when she's gone, no one will remember he existed. But the book itself is one of Stout's best, which I would say about all of his works. I re-read these novels or listen to the audiobooks about once a year, and reading the new introductions by many other authors makes them even better. I recommend not only buying this novel, but all of Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe novels.

A kid gets killed by a hit-and-run driver. He had talked to Nero Wolfe a couple of days before. This opens up an investigation that leads to something huge. Also we get to see Archie, Fred, Saul and Orrie as the men of action that we know they are, but rarely see. One of my top Wolfe novels.

The entire Wolfe/Goodwin canon is good. Some of it is exceptionally good; including, this one.

One of Rex Stout's more clever stories, skillfully narrated by Michael Pritchard. The real humor and character of Archie Goodwin appears through this edition.

One of the classic Nero Wolfe books. The murder of a 12 year old boy that Archie asks to dinner prompts Wolfe to accept a $10,000 fee to investigate for a woman that ends up dead. A crowd of suspects, and you'll never guess which one!
