Awesome story, you will be engulfed from the beginning. You will enjoy all the characters and storylines immensly... until you remember that its a true account of combat in America's longest war, and that these storybook heroes are indeed actual Men living and dying. Mr. Cornett lived an extraordinary life. One on his best friends he mentions in the book appears(along with others) in History channel documentaries of the war. I would love to meet Mr. Cornett and have him autograoh my tattered copy. He is already a minor celebrity among my coworkers who read this book. Best wishes sir!

The book was riveting. It made you feel as if you were actually in the conflict. Because I was a peactime grunt, I had no notion of what actual combat was like. His painting of the war from his perspective really made clear what it was like for an GI in those painful years when survival was a blessing and coming back to the states was a curse. The author is skilled in depicting his viewpoint on a physical, emotional, and spirtual level unlike anything I've encounter on the topic.

After having read about Alan 'Lurch' Cornett in many other books - his story was long overdue. Cornett's account of his military career was a no-holds-barred story of ups and downs. A roller coaster ride through ten years of dedicated and valiant service. Mr. Cornett: Thanks for autographing my MPC/bookmarker.
