Mamdani is a masterful story teller of political history who counters the hubris, half truths, and outright propaganda of our times with hard, not-easily-accepted, facts. While rolling back the USSR, we sowed and nurtured the seeds of international terrorism that is turning on us today. If we wish to leave this world better than we found it, this book is the book to read about the origins of political and religious terrorism extant today. Mamdani does not take sides, and there is plenty of triumph and failure to go around. This book may not be an easy read for those who lived through the Cold War without paying close attention the details of the various conficts among the surrogates, especially those in Afghanistan. Mamdani provides an extensive bibliography for anyone interested in further information.
