This book was such a favortie of mine as a child and I still have my copy, which I read to my own children and will soon be sharing with my grandson. The story highlights the need and urning in children to have special places where they are master of their own universe. I had many such places in my childhood; places of my fondest memories. That is why this book captured me at the age of seven and continues to invite me to have special places. Additionally there is the element of community in this book that I would hope is not simply nostalgic for me and not realized for children today. The little girl, Susan, encounters many people in her search for a special place to avoid her antogonists, her pesky brothers. Each of these people are helpful and Susan listens and appreciates their help but ultimately Susan has it with in herself to find her own answers. This remains a powerful message for children. There are no super heros or magic. The human spirit in a child needs love and support and will be able to fly independently. This book, like so many books I have enjoyed, captures the wonder of childhood in its smallest moments.
