Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
PreS-A gentle, rhyming story chock-full of nighttime creatures both real and imaginary. The more ghoulish characters such as the goblin, mummy, and "swamp-thing" are represented pictorially as benign and nonthreatening. When the book concludes with a human mother and child reading in a bedroom filled with stuffed-toy representations of all of the characters from the story, the harmless and tender tone is reinforced. That said, there is a slight mismatch between subject matter and the intended audience. Some preschoolers still might find the suggestion of even the friendliest of ghosts, vampires, and the like rather unsettling bedtime fare. The odd mix of real animals such as bats and cats along with werewolves and ghosts may make it more difficult for caretakers to reassure very young children that things like dragons and gremlins are only make believe. Unfortunately, this offering falls short of the standard for humor and charm set by the author's My Monster Mama Loves Me So (Lothrop, 1999). Also, the illustrations tend a bit toward the saccharine. With the plethora of quality bedtime stories available, this title is a marginal purchase.-Rosalyn Pierini, San Luis Obispo City-County Library, CA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
