Mel White’s Grace & Demion is inspired, delightful and profound! It’s a serious tale of love pitted against lies, of faith pitted against doubt, all played out in the heart and mind of a young boy scout as he discovers that he is gay. The small but resolute angel, Grace, is enchanting. Even the demon-in-training, Demion, is endearing in a perverse way. Grace embodies the holy love her name implies; and Demion, tries his hardest to be the best of Satan’s worst. While the struggle for Gay Civil and Human Rights is engaged in the public arena, the struggle for self-acceptance and self-esteem by young lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people is a deeply personal, private and too often lonely one. Thanks to Mel for this splendid fable that speaks the truth, with both force and tenderness, about God’s unconditional love and the inherent dignity and integrity of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

Mel White is a great LGBT activist, a best-selling theologian, and has a personal story that is nothing short of incredible. I imagine that a different but related sort of bravery  led him to write this simple but profound parable. This book gave me chills, moved me to tears, and most importantly gave me a deeper sense of connection to a radically loving God. This is a very special book. I plan to share it with many people.

Grace and Demion combines the demon-in-training storytelling of Screwtape Letters with the real life suffering Satan’s lies bring to LGBT people. In this well-written story the triumphant news that The Creator loves the rich diversity of creation echoes through heaven  and hell. Mel White brings welcome news to many wounded Christians. As an ordained Baptist minister I whole-heartedly recommend this book for LGBT that need to hear the good news about God's love for ALL as well as for allies and friends that might better understand how to be of help in the healing of Church-inflicted wounds in LGBT people.  Rev. “Gay people are not given myths through traditional culture with which we can explain our experience to ourselves. We have to create our own myths. Stories like Mel White’s Grace and Demion (which I had the blessed opportunity to assist with editing) is a delightful and wise example of how to rearrange the old stories in order to create deeply meaningful, satisfying and revelatory personal myths.” Toby Johnson, author, Gay Perspective: Things our [homo]sexuality tells us about the nature of God and the Universe and The Myth of a the Great Secret: An Appreciation of Joseph Campbell

As a high school teacher in a public school, I can honestly say that this book is a must read for the youth who are experiencing difficulty growing up LGBT. It shows that you are not alone and that our individual stories matter in this world

This author wrote the seminal book on coming out as a gay Christian in the U.S (Stranger at the Gate: To Be Gay and Christian in America). From there was launched a powerful life of activism working to end the misuse of religion and Christian scripture to demonize and harm LGBT people. With GRACE & DEMION, he's offering an important message in the form of an easy to access fable to both those who have been harmed by spiritual violence and those who may have been perpetrators. Buy this book to better understand the effects of religion as a weapon against LGBT people and buy a couple more for your friends who will be comforted by this jolly little fable.
