The stories are told from the point of view of the grandmother of the household, lovingly accepting (and assisting with) her husband's growing population of animals in his "ark" at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains.
Running through the stories is a gentle reminder of the importance of having compassion for our fellow creatures. The book reads like a charming volume from several generations ago and is enjoyable for young readers and adults alike.
Grandfather's Ark will become a treasured volume in your library, one that you'll return to whenever you want to remember that there are incredibly kind people in this world and that inside every wary, wild creature is a vibrant spirit just waiting to become your new best friend.
If you enjoy James Herriot's work, you'll be pleased with this book.
