Overview

Grass (Arbai Trilogy Series #1) by Sheri S. Tepper

“One of the most satisfying science fiction novels I have read in years.”—The New York Times Book Review

Here is a novel as original as the breathtaking, unspoiled world for which it is named, a place where all appears to be in idyllic balance. Generations ago, humans fled to the cosmic anomaly known as Grass. Over time, they evolved a new and intricate society. But before humanity arrived, another species had already claimed Grass for its own. It, too, had developed a culture. . . .

Now, a deadly plague is spreading across the stars. No world save Grass has been left untouched. Marjorie Westriding Yrarier has been sent from Earth to discover the secret of the planet’s immunity. Amid the alien social structure and strange life-forms of Grass, Lady Westriding unravels the planet’s mysteries to find a truth so shattering it could mean the end of life itself.

a plague threatens mankind on all planets but Grass, a world of various colors, shades and textures of grass. a world of culturally inbred aristocrats and their mounts, the Hippae. a world to which Marjorie arrives, hoping to find answers both to the worlds-threatening plague and her own overwhelming feelings of guilt, responsibility and love in a most extraordinary way.

Another superb book from Tepper. Her characterizations are excellent as always, and the plot works on multiple levels. There are surprises throughout the story. Truly a classic.

This is a very nice documentary, but it's reallly innaccurate.

Can't see why so many reviews heap high praise on this. Found the characters thinly drawn. Even the beasts failed to capture my imagination. And Foxen? This is a creature that can't be seen. I kept having visions of the Carfax hand puppet fox. I just didn't buy into this.

What an excellent novel. The description of this book on the Net, as far as I have read, is a bit misleading. I attribute this to the fact that this novel is always much more than one thinks it is. Life on a very different planet with native sentient beings, ruins of a lost alien civilization, class struggle, religious differences, etc. Very engaging and I highly recommend!

The best of Tepper's uniformly very good work. Characters are beautifully drawn. The story is complex and fascinating and theme does not intrude, nor cause the plot awkwardness found in some of Tepper's books. Read this!
