Overview

A fascinating and stunning novel from Pete Wentz, the founder and bassist of punk sensation Fall Out Boy—that reveals the dark side of rock-and-roll.

Sometimes, late at night in the hotel room, after the lights have gone out and the mistakes have already been made, when it is heavy and silent and still, I lie awake and listen to my pulse on the pillow…

Imagine you are on a tour bus, the miles whistling away beneath you as you sleep. Tomorrow you will wake up in downtown Somewhere. It doesn’t matter. All the skylines look the same. Time is only marked by events. The world is on a first-name basis with you.

But you…you barely even know yourself. There are those who give in completely to the idea of what it means to be famous. And those who can’t ever seem to leave the past behind. Life is a deep and contemplative story stuck on repeat—love, loss, self-destruction, self-discovery.

If you could go back to the way things were before you made it…would everything still be gray?

Kirkus Reviews
A young rock star marinates himself in psychotropic drugs, ruminates on life on the road and pines away for his girl. If this debut novel by former Fall Out Boy bassist and tabloid-fodder Wentz (The Boy with the Thorn in his Side, 2004), with MTV News' James Montgomery, is as autobiographical as it's made out to be, this young man has some issues to work out. Fortunately, the fictionalized rock star who narrates this dreamy version of horrible events has a distinctive voice, even if he's going nowhere fast. The unnamed guitarist is the shooting star of a fast-rising rock band, surrounded by groupies, managers and guys with names like "the Disaster." Drugged out and emotionally vacant, he spends his lonely hours in indistinguishable hotel rooms longing for the equally unnamed Her. "I owe it all to Her. Her. She made me, she put me here. We fought about that. We fought about a lot of things, but I still miss Her. She is Chicago to me, the humid summers and the Lake-Effect winters. When I'm homesick, it's for Her." And that's pretty much it for the next 200-plus pages of stream-of-consciousness unraveling, punctuated by bar fights, suicide attempts, stints in rehab and uncomfortable confessions: "I'm nothing more than a frightened child, a scared little boy with tough-guy tattoos and a hollow snarl, and that no matter how much I like to think of myself as a die-hard romantic, I'd never have the guts to actually die for love." Even though nothing really happens, the prose is quite sharp, and the despair of the main character is evocatively portrayed. It all makes for an interesting inside look at the circus, especially for those who think that knowing a little magazine gossip means you know someone. Accomplished, though the mean-spirited denouement may put off some readers, and the lead's lack of transformation gives it a dark undercurrent.

I read this because I am a Fall Out Boy fan, and an even bigger Pete Wentz fan. This is a truly amazing understated book. I hate to think that some people won't read this because someone from Fall Out Boy wrote this. A great read, if you know/like the author or not. Should not be missed. :)

I'm a huge Fall Out Boy fan to begin with, so when I heard Pete Wentz was writing a book, I had to have it. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Pete Wentz's writing style, because it is laced throughout the pages, reflecting on his unique choice of words. The book is very well written, and it is a great story about finding yourself when you feel like all is lost. Definitely a book I couldn't put down.

This was a really incredible book. As far as I can tell it is semi biographical. As a person who struggles with the two mental disorders that are described in this book, I can tell you that his descriptions are hauntingly accurate. I'd recommend entering into reading this book with a darker mindset. You need to understand that he is describing painful things (which he does exceptionally well). Proceed with caution if you are currently struggling with deep depression or anxiety as I imagine that this might be triggering. All in all, a really well written book.

FU.CK YOU! You are a steriotyping as.shole. You obveously have no comprehension of the worlds of depression and music. So why don't you shut up and do some research on those subjects before mocking the pain of Pete Wentz.

Wow. Ok. I seriously just read the last words of this book and all I can think is wow. I, like many people, bought this book because I'm a massive fall out boy fan. And when I bought it, I did have some pretty high expectations because I know that Pete is great with words. But I never expected it to be th good. I could not pit it down and finished it in two days (I would have finished it sooner, but I had school). This book is an emotional roller coaster and does talk about some pretty serious stuff, just a heads up for anyone. I'm still not one hundred percent certain if this is autobigraphical or not. Some of it it certainly based on experiences that pete had, I know that. But no .matter what, you should read this. Absolutly amazing if you want to feel something. I only wish I could do this book justice in my review. I really enjoyed it so muxch and as soon as I put it down, I wanted to pick it right back up again. I think that I ak going to hvpavw to buy a physical copy of this book because that's hoq good it is. Sorry for my long winded review and thnk you for anyone who read this far. You should buy this book, fall out boy fan or not it's fantastic. (Though fob fans might find some references in it.) I think I might just go ahead and reread it. Goodbye and thanks.
