Overview

(Helen) Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) was an English author, illustrator, mycologist, and conservationist who was best known for her children's books, which featured animal characters such as Peter Rabbit. Educated at home by a succession of governesses, she had little opportunity to mix with other children. Potter had frogs and newts, and even a pet bat. The basis of her many projects and stories were the small animals that she smuggled into the house or observed during family holidays in Scotland and the Lake District. She was encouraged to publish her story, The Tale of Peter Rabbit (1902), but she struggled to find a publisher until it was accepted when she was 36, by Frederick Warne & Co. The small book and her following works were extremely well received and she gained an independent income from the sales. Potter eventually wrote 23 books. These were published in a small format, easy for a child to hold and read. Her writing efforts abated around 1920 due to poor eyesight.

My 6 year old fell in love with Peter Rabbit thru a book at her school library. I wanted to surprise her with her own copy of the book but kept buying copies that didn't have illustrations. The first time was my fault since I didn't read the fine print on the copy that said no illustrations - but the review for this book made it appear that illustrations were included in this copy. I haven't seen them and the table of contents is unusable to access the individual stories. Shame on you BN - I really thought I was getting a quality product.

We love the stories of Beatrix Potter and are currently sending them to our nieces and nephews. We purchased this copy online (since our local B & N did not stock this version) as a good introduction to just a few of her stories, plus the illustrations of course. Unfortunately, when the books arrived, we found they were not illustrated, just the text. We went to return the books at our local store and were told we could not since this is a "print on demand" copy and can only be returned back to the online store, at our own expense for the shipping. First time we have been unsatisfied with B & N !

Every child should be exposed to the classics in childrens literature. Beatrix Potter is just that. Wonderfully enchanting stories. The illustrations are beautiful. This book is timeless as all classics are.
