Overview

The Great Book of Combat Aircraft by Paolo Matricardi

Transformed from exciting technological innovation to a tool of military supremacy, the aircraft has radically changed the rules of war, and may now be the determining element in victory or defeat. Since the early days of biplanes, which attacked with the sun behind them, a saying has always held true for fighter pilots: “You can’t destroy what you can’t see.” With the advent of radar and missiles, even the most expert veterans recognized the need to develop aircraft able to escape interception systems.

Through the models that have made history, from the Santos-Dumont onward, this book follows the evolution of combat aircraft, recalling the battles in which they played leading roles, up to the introduction of the F-117, the most ruthless war machine that the skies have ever seen, and the mysterious bombers of the near future.
