Overview

Adventurer, artist and author Simon Combes embarks on the greatest adventure of his lifetime: a search for nine great cats of the world. His goal: to research, locate and ultimately paint each cat in the glory of its natural habitat. In a sometimes hair-raising, sometimes hysterical account of his voyages over three years on three continents, Combes captures--in stories, paintings and photos--the drama of these nine mysterious and largely elusive species of the cat family, and the humans that cherish, and also threaten them. The nine cats are the cougar, jaguar, Siberian tiger, lion, clouded leopard, cheetah, Bengal tiger, African leopard and snow leopard. Combes' first illustrated book, An African Experience, has 50,000 copies in print. Full color throughout; paintings, photographs and sketches.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Susan Hepler
Following a military career in Kenya and other parts of Africa, Combs decided to devote his time to capturing the beauty of the wild through his fine art. This is a collection of reminiscences, hair-raising encounters, drinking stories and adventures that Combs enjoyed while painting and photographing nine members of the cat family, including the clouded leopard, Bengal tiger, African leopard, Cheetah, Siberian tiger, and cougar. The paintings are breathtaking and Coombs reveals his thoughts in overcoming the artistic dilemmas he had in creating them. His field sketches contribute much to the overall design of this oversized book. Combs emerges as a dramatic if somewhat self-absorbed storyteller, and he easily involves readers in his adventures while creating sympathy for these great cats and the need for preserving their habitats.

What People are Saying About This

Dr. Richard Leakey
Simon Combes has produced a remarkable book of paintings in which he has brilliantly captured details of expression, body language and natural colour. There are many good books on wildlife but few can match this one in terms of lasting pleasure and value.
