Music and visual media are given equal weight in this unusual treatment by an art historian and a musician/scholar, who share an interest in the interrelatedness of the arts. The current project grew out of a series of college courses they taught on this subject. The authors effectively use quotations, descriptive text, and visual images to capture the work of distinguished artists who met with equally distinguished composers to paint their portraits. The authors also assess their subjects' careers, providing new insights and inspiration for further exploration. The volume's chronological arrangement provides a sense of continuity. This innovative, beautiful book is highly recommended for art and music collections.-- James E. Ross, Seattle P.L.
