The greatest living historian of the New England coast, Jeremy D'Entremont, tells the gripping stories of more than a dozen dramatic shipwrecks from the Isles of Shoals to West Quoddy Head. These include:
The harrowing wreck of the Nottingham Galley, whose crew resorted to desperate measures to survive, at barren Boon Island in 1710.
The spectacular Royal Tar disaster of 1836, when a steamer carrying circus animals burst into flames and sank in Penobscot Bay.
The unsolved case of the Don, out for a pleasure cruise with 34 passengers and mysteriously lost in Casco Bay in 1941.
The USS Eagle 56, a U.S. Navy ship sunk by a German U-boat near the close of World War II, with the largest loss of life in New England waters during the war.
An heir to the great tradition of Edward Rowe Snow, Jeremy D'Entremont has been writing about New England maritime history for two dozen years. Webmaster of "New England Lighthouses: A Virtual Guide" at Lighthouse.cc, he is founder of Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse and president of the American Lighthouse Foundation. Jeremy is the series editor of the centennial editions of Edward Rowe Snow, and he has written a series of authoritative guides to New England lighthouses, including The Lighthouses of Maine. He lives in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
