Gene Autry was the greatest western singer who ever stepped in front of a microphone, and if anyone doubts it, they can get their minds changed by this budget-priced ten-song collection. This 27-minute CD may not offer a lot in length, and any real Autry greatest-hits collection could easily run 20 songs and still be skimpy. But the ten songs that are here are the ones for which audiences most loved Autry -- "That Silver-Haired Daddy of Mine," "You Are My Sunshine," "Back in the Saddle Again," "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You," "Blueberry Hill" (he had the hit with it more than ten years before Fats Domino), "South of the Border," and Stan Jones' "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky," the latter in its most soulful and moving interpretation ever. The sound is excellent, and the particular versions (Autry recorded a couple of these numbers more than once) are definitive. There are no notes or recording dates, but the music is so beguiling that this is a must-own bargain volume.
