Overview

For many people, Murray Head is the voice of the early-'80s mega-hit "One Night in Bangkok." This Greatest Hits collection is the proof that the man was more active than that, even though his moment in the spotlight had gone by. This CD presents examples of about everything the actor/singer has done: musicals ("One Night in Bangkok" came from Tim Rice's Chess), film music, his English albums, and his French albums released in Quebec. The CD starts with what remains to this day his most poignant song, "Say It Ain't So Joe." From there onward the listener is pushed around from local hits to obscure titles. Worth of note are the Québécois hits "You Are" and "Comme des Enfants Qui Jouent," the latter co-written with French musical writer Luc Plamondon (of Notre-Dame de Paris and Starmania fame). "Dearest Anne," from Yves Simon's film Cocktail Molotov has a nice retro jazz feel. But his rendition of Bernard Lavilliers' "Le Temps Passe" is half-hearted at best. Most of the material selected for this collection could play on adult contemporary radio: well produced, well sung, unremarkable for the most part. Since the label Headcase was in the middle of reissuing all of Murray Head's catalog, information as to which album each song was taken from would have been appreciated.
