Overview

Though titled Greatest Hits, this Five Stairsteps CD is "merely" the group's 14 sides, off of seven singles from Curtis Mayfield's Windy C label, all somewhat out of order, opening with their second chart single, "World of Fantasy," and offering their debut, "You Waited to Long," as the closer. In between are a brace of single A- and B-sides, including the ethereal "Come Back" and the jaunty "Stay Close to Me," and the soaring "The Touch of You," all featuring Clarence Burke Jr.'s silky smooth lead tenor, and their cover of Smokey Robinson & the Miracles' "Ooh Baby Baby," driven by James Burke's glorious falsetto. The Stairsteps/Mayfield composition "Danger She's a Stranger" is here with its Mayfield-authored B-side, "Behind Curtains" (which makes exquisite use of horns, strings, and bells), thus weaving in another thread in the tapestry of the late soul legend's legacy. The songs here are all strong enough (and it's a ringing testament to the group and to Mayfield as a producer that this is true) to comprise a proper, substantial LP. The quality of the release is fair, dating from early in Collectables' history, when the transfers were done hastily and the CDs frequently had no annotation -- there's none here, either, and the disc could use a fresh transfer (the songs sound fuller, richer, and louder on the Buddha First Family of Soul: The Best of the Five Stairsteps).
