Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 [Epic]

by Johnny Paycheck

Cassette(Cassette)

Overview

The volume two separates more than just a pair of greatest-hits collections. In this case, it was the second coming of Johnny Paycheck as a chart hitmaker with David Allan Coe's "Take This Job and Shove It" and a major-label contract after years of country hits on the indie Little Darlin' label. This is pretty much the whole arc of his career with Epic and even at that the label had to come up with some padding in order to fill up even a shortie album. The half-dozen hits that are here strut their stuff right proudly and the cover version of "Rhythm Guitar" with its great line "Nobody wants to play rhythm and guitar behind Jesus" is enjoyable. Paycheck shouldn't have bothered trying to cover a Paul Simon song, though.
