Children's Literature
Another in the "Learning About Dogs" series, this volume introduces the middle reader to characteristics, history and ownership expectations of the fastest dog on earth. Sighthounds may have originated in ancient Egypt. By Greek times, a sighthound is recorded in The Odyssey as the only creature that recognizes Odysseus after years of travel. The origin of the name Greyhound is a mystery since most of these hunters are not gray, or blue as this color is called. Most Greyhounds in North America today began their lives as racing dogs since they can reach speeds of up to 45 miles per hour. Up until the 1980s, most retired racing Greyhounds were euthanized. Rescue groups now actively place the normally two- to five-year-old retirees in homes as pets. Many Greyhounds are also raised as show dogs. Quick facts about the Greyhound and the dog in general, a short glossary, lists of references and an index round out the book. The many photos, including the two-page spread showing the main parts of the dog, show the variations in this fine dog. This introduction should make children aware of the importance of pet ownership and the value of this more specialized breed. 2001, Capstone High-Interest Books/Capstone Press, $21.26. Ages 9 to 12.
