Grieg: The Complete Orchestral Music

Recorded between 2002 and 2004, this eight-disc set contains the complete orchestral music of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. This includes works one would expect -- the "Peer Gynt Suites," the "Lyric Suite," "Symphonic Dances," the "Symphony in C minor," and so on -- works one might expect -- the "Piano Concerto," the "Holberg Suite," and the other string orchestra pieces -- works one might not expect -- transcriptions like "Bell Ringing," orchestral songs like "The Last Spring," and melodramas like "Land Sighting" -- and a work one would never expect -- a concert version of "Peer Gynt" complete with singers and actors. And though there have been better recorded performances of the best-known works here, overall it is a tremendous achievement. Ole Kristian Ruud is a born Grieg conductor with not only the skills to bring off the music but a real feeling for the idiom as well. One of the salient characteristics of his interpretations is their ease and naturalness. In his hands, the forms sound inevitable, the harmonies sound sensual, the melodies sound sentimental, and the rhythms sound elemental. The Bergen Philharmonic, Norway's premier orchestra, matches Ruud for insight, understanding, and virtuosity. The strings are sweet in the "Elegiac Melodies," the woodwinds characterful in "Peer Gynt Suites," the brass brilliant in "The March of the Dwarves," and the whole ensemble incandescent in the "Norwegian Dances." The vocal soloists are both outstanding, though soprano Marita Solberg sounds a bit fresher in the orchestral songs than baritone Hkan Hagegrd in the concert "Peer Gynt." And while Noriko Ogawa may not efface memories of Richter, Lupu, Michelangeli, and a dozen other pianists in the concerto, hers is still a powerful and poetic account of this familiar work. For some, the actors in the concert "Peer Gynt" might prove a distraction; but others may find that knowing what is actually going on helps make listening to the music a deeper and more meaningful experience. Naturally, BIS' digital sound is clear, crisp, colorful, and immediate. Anyone remotely interested in Grieg's music should try this set.
