Because our relationships with our animal companions are unlike human relationships, the death of a pet is like no other loss that we will experience. In this book, Betty J. Carmack draws on the wisdom of Ecclesiastes, her own experience, and interviews with dozens of pet lovers to guide the reader through the initial loss of a pet to the dawning of new hope and reassurance.

The author truly touches the heart of both the human and animal emotions during the grieving cycle of losing a pet. I both laughed and cried as I read the different stories that she tells with such tenderness and compassion. This truly is a book that everyone who has lost a beloved pet should read. I have shared this book with friends who have recently lost pets and it has helped them to realize that it is perfectly normal to grieve so deeply. A must read for all pet lovers!

This book is for anyone who has lost a pet, anticipates the loss of their pet or who is currently going through the grief process. Ms. Carmack candidly talks about her own personal emotions concerning the pets she has lost as well as the stories of others and their pets who range from cats to parrots to dogs. This is an "easy read" that immediately captures your attention. You won't want to put it down.

A blurb for this book observes, "I was crying before I finished the introduction," and they're not kidding. If you've ever truly loved and lost a companion animal, don't be surprised to find yourself weeping openly from the get-go. The author begins by relating her own heart-wrenching story, establishing her credibility on the topic and serving as a launching point for the others whose stories of loss fill the pages. The value of this book is not in its ability to help you make difficult decisions or to offer self-help solutions, but to gently reassure mourning pet-parents that they aren't crazy or alone in their grief.
