Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sue Poduska
Part of the "First Facts: Bears" series, this is a engaging introduction to a very popular animal. Readers first learn about the relative size, strength, and appearance of grizzly bears. Next, the author discusses the features of the bears that give them their power and their habitat: they live only in the northwestern United States and western Canada. They lead solitary lives, using scent markings to establish territory. Meat eaters, they hunt elk and moose and catch salmon. They will also snack on nuts and berries. The bears hibernate in dens up to six months during winter. Their cubs spend their first few months in those dens and then are taught to hunt for food. Mother grizzlies deserve their reputations for fiercely protecting their cubs. Throughout the story, many odd facts help to maintain interest. Numerous color and action-filled photos provide an excellent backdrop for learning about the bears. Reference aids include a table of contents, brief glossary, "Read More" and "Internet Sites" sections, and an index. These references make this a valuable resource. The writing is simple enough for younger children but filled with enough information to be valuable for middle grades. Reviewer: Sue Poduska
