Guia de Supervivencia para las Madres Modernas

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publishers Weekly
A feminist activist and editor of the California-based magazine Hip Mama, Gore has written an inclusive parenting guide for the modern mother. Unlike most parenting authors, Gore believes that families are not necessarily "a nuclear group of married, white, heterosexual Christian Republicans who may or may not love each other." Here, she reconciles hip or "rebel" trends with maternity. For instance, while covering the basics of planning for pregnancy and birth, she argues that piercing does not necessarily interfere with breastfeeding. Gore also discusses temper tantrums, sexuality, surviving poverty and family dissolution, and preserving one's identity while developing an individual parenting style. Each chapter concludes with advice from "rebel parents" such as activist writers Mary Kay Blakely, Jessica Mitford, and Susie Bright. This mixture of good commonsense parenting advice, wit, and politics is a refreshing alternative to traditional childrearing books. The Spanish-language translation retains the irreverent humor of the original. An excellent addition to all parenting collections.Barbara M.
