With it's blunt humor starting on the first page. This book takes a practical look at what a medium level hit man / mobster needs to do to make his life work. Playing his cards right to survive and even find love(almost by accident).

What is happening to the Monkey cage? Why is it all falling apart? That is what Charlie Swift what likes to know. Ever since he received those darn ledgers he¿s been a target. With only his mother, younger brother, girlfriend, and a dumb goon named new guy, does he stand a chance? You¿ll find out. Victor Gischler was going for a novel about a mobster who is as loyal as a dog. That is what he accomplishes. Charlie Swift is dedicated to finding his boss, Stan. Gun Monkeys is a book that grabs your attention from the start, and never lets go. If you like books with blood, and gore, this is the one for you. Gun Monkeys is full of betrayals, humor, and violence, just like in real life I would say.

Most will say that it's a page turner, I must disagree. You will start at one cover of the book, and be at the other cover before you finish your morning coffee. I couldn't put this book down! Page after page, and event after event, the book takes you into the mind of Charlie Swift, a seasoned mobster. You find that he's not a bad guy at heart, just following orders and counting the rings of a telephone call. When his boss disappears and his friends turn up missing, Swift finds that he must think for himself, and guard what is close to him--Family and his girlfriend. This book is marinated in violence, seasoned with action, and peppered with humor that at times will have your stomach hurting.

A stone killer for the hero??? Hard to believe, but Gischler pulls it off big time. Each succeeding page is faster than the last, building to a finish any reader will hate to put down.

Gun Monkeys is an excellent story seen through the eyes of mob muscle Charlie Swift. He plows through the problems that confront him like a mixture of a low brow Columbo and the Terminator. The grit and violence are punctuated with a clever sense of humor. If you enjoy the Sopranos or the movie Ransom, you must read this book.
