The Kate Daniels series sat on my TBR list for a long time and friends kept urging me to read it, which I finally did a couple of months ago. Let me tell you, once I read that first book, Magic Bites, I went right out and bought the entire series and sat down and read them one right after the other (that included all the novellas and the extra Curran POV's from the Ilona Andrews website). With Gunmetal Magic you get a great story set in the Kate Daniels World...PLUS...there's a bonus! At the end is Magic Gifts, a Kate and Curran novella that was previously put on the website. Now I'm not one that will usually encourage you to skip to the back of book, but in this case, you really should. Magic Gifts should be read BEFORE you read Gunmetal magic. They both take place during the same timeframe, but some events will make more sense in Gunmetal Magic if you read it second. Gunmetal Magic features Kate's best friend, Andrea Nash, whose life as a secret shapeshifter has been turned completely inside out and she has a lot of issues to figure out in a few short days: Will she going to be able to imbrace her inner bouda (heyena) and join the Pack? Will she be able to repair her relationship with Rapheal, the bouda alpha male? Will she solve the murder of four pack members and bring justice for their families? I adore this series/world! There's fast paced action, badass heroine's, sexy alpha shifters, and tons of humor: "Roman dismounted next to us, his staff in his hand. He wore a tank top and black pajama pants with an Eeyore pattern." How could you not be enjoy a book that has a black volhv (dark priest/wizard) that shows up to a confrontation in Eeyore pajamas? If you're like me and this series has been sitting on your TBR pile, then move it to the top! It's a must read!

This is a fantastic, fast-paced addition to the Kate Daniels world that follows Cutting Edge employee and ex-Knight of the Order Andrea Nash as she fights ... everyone, really. I thought of making a list of all the nasty creatures that show up, starting with some giant bugs who try to eat her neighbor on page 2, but the list kept growing. The lesson here is that you should never go crawling through the sewers in magical Atlanta. NEVER. Fans of Andrea and Raphael will [spoiler redacted], but I have to say the Russian dark priest, Roman, stole the show. I recommend this to all urban fantasy fans, especially to those who love the Kate Daniels series, the Dresden Files, or the Iron Druid Chrinicale.

A Must Read! I recommend you read the Kate Daniels series in order (Magic Bites, Magic Burns, Magic Strikes, Magic Bleeds and Magic Slays) prior to reading this book. However, if you are unfamiliar with the series you can still following along with no trouble. I do warn though, if you are planning to read the series, this book will expose countless spoilers. I absolutely loved this book! The plot was engaging and adventurous, the story just pulls you in and before you know it you are completely saturated and immersed into the story. I enjoyed this so much, I never wanted this book to end. Andrea can hold her own with this great addition to the series. The plot had a wonderful whodunit mystery feel to it. The storyline was darkly complex and will keep you guessing until the end. The twisted humor was so plentiful, on several occasions, I found myself actually laughing out loud. My appetite is wet for the next Kate Daniels novel and following up Andrea’s book with an intertwining free novella with Kate and Curran, was a nice touch. The duo authors have definitely out done themselves and I can’t wait to see what trouble awaits Kate and Your Furriness in the near future. I highly recommend this book to fellow dark urban fantasy readers and look forward to Kate Daniels book 6 and Jim and Dali’s book – Kate Daniels World #2.

When I heard that the next "Kate Daniels" book was going to be about Andrea, I was disappointed. I wanted more of Kate and Curran and didn't think Andrea and Raphael would be as interesting. Boy, was I wrong! This was a superb book with everything I've come to expect from Kate. There is plenty of action, daring deeds, and the superbly witty conversation I've come to expect from Ilona and Gordon. This is an excellent addition to this series and I give it my highest recommendation. Don't pass this one up because it's not Kate. You'll be missing out on a great book.

Ilona Andrews (husband/wife team) came up with another winner. I didn't think I'd really get into a whole novel around Kate's best friend, Andrea Nash, but I was wrong. As always, Ilona Andrews keeps the tempo going, so Andrea's angst around missing Raphael is woven in with so much action and suspense, I felt it even more strongly than I expected. I love the humor popping up in even otherwise grim scenes - so much wit that so many other writers do not have. Can't wait for the next novel in this series!

This was a good addition to the series. It brought out the aspects of Andrea and Raphael that all fans of the series have wanted to see and know more about. It's definitely worth the money. Can't wait for the next one.

Love Love Love this book! The Kate Daniels series is my favorite Ilona Andrews series so I was pleased when I heard that the authors were writing a book based on Kate's best friend, Andrea. Andrea is just as kick-ass as Kate and she turns furry - what's not to love? The story line is intriguing and engrossing and Andrea's relationship status with Raphael and the pack is resolved. This book is a must read for fans of Ilona Andrews and all urban fantasy lovers.

Ilona Andews books are witty and fun. I never know where the mystery will next lead the heroin. Andrea and Kate are kick ass!

If you love the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews, then you will undoubtedly love this one too. Andrea is the star of the show in this spin-off and she doesn't disappoint. She is growing into her skin, so to speak, and it was a "can't put it down" adventure. A must read for fans of the urban fantasy genre, however I do recommend reading the Kate Daniels series first to become familiar with the characters.

This novel further perpetuates the awesomeness that is the husband and wife writing team. A great exploration and furtherance of this series' supporting character Andrea.

I truly enjoyed this look into Andrea's life. The mystery was good and the characters were enjoyable. The writing was of course classic Ilona Andrews, their voice is in all they do. Excellent world building!!

This is another powerful entry into Andrews' Kate Daniels' World. Andrea has been a side character for a while. She is Kate's best friend. After being kicked out of the Order of the Knights of Merciful Aid after being outed as a shapeshifter, Andrea is at loose ends. She isworking with Kate at Cutting Edge and trying to figure out what she wants from life. Andrea was raised in a bouda group - werehyenas - but she is beastkin - her father was a hyena turned human. Beastkin are despised by most shifters who were human first and then animal. Her bouda group systematically abused her and her mother until her mother finally found the courage to run away. Andrea has spent years denying her werehyena side. Now she has to come to terms with it. She is also on the outs with her werehyena boyfriend Raphael who can't understand why Andrea would be reluctant to swear allegiance to his mother and join another bouda pack. He hurts her very badly when he seems to have taken up with a beautiful but brainless human and flaunts her in front of Andrea.Besides this personal turmoil, Andrea has a case to investigate which involves huge venomous snake shifters and ancient Egytian gods. There is a lot of adventure and excitement as she and Raphael need to work together to prevent the world from falling into chaos.Andrea is as strong and as kickass as Kate Daniels. She makes a great lead character. Her bad childhood and determination to make her own decisions and choose her own path make her a character we can really care about. Cameos from favorite characters from the Kate Daniel's series add to the richness of this story. Fans of urban fantasy with really kickass heroines will not want to miss this story.

"A Novel in the World of Kate Daniels" is a bit misleading. And I'd have rather read these in reverse order, but what you're actually getting is a recounting of the events of the same pair of days in the life of the Cutting Edge agency. In Gunmetal Magic Andrea Nash has issues. Not the least of which is being asked to investigate the mysterious deaths of four employees at her ex's reclamation company. Then there's getting in touch with her furry side, facing down the embodiment of an Egyptian death god, and of course, Aunt B. Good thing Andrea knows how to accessorize. In Magic Gifts, date night at a Korean barbecue takes a wrong turn when two vamps go on a killing spree. In the bloody aftermath, Kate Daniels and Curran track down the origins of a mysterious necklace. My recommendation? Read Magic Gifts first and the timeline will make a lot more sense.

I should start by saying that I have really enjoyed most of the stories written by Andrews and her husband. I have always liked Andrea as a character and wanted to read her story. This didn't quite live up to my expectations though and I've vacillated between ratings. The crazy mythological smorgasbord couldn't really hold my attention this time. I could overlook that if the characterizations were amazing but this fell short. In the course of their story, some of the decisions Andrea and Rachael make seem ridiculous. Plus, the romantic tension between them came across manufactured. Kate and Curran set a high bar though so that could be my problem. Still, I think this would have worked better as a novella.

I enjoyed this book. This was a re-read for me and I had a lot of fun re-visiting this book since I know what will happen to these wonderful characters as the series moves forward. I do remember being slightly disappointed when this book was first published simply because I wanted another book featuring Kate and Curran and I got Andrea instead. I ended up loving the book though. Andrea and Kate are best friends so their lives overlap in a lot of areas but Andrea does have her own story to tell and I am glad that Ilona Andrews made the decision to let her do just that in this book. Andrea is not in a great place as this book opens. Her relationship with Raphael is over and she has lost her job with the Order. Both of these things meant the world to her and helped shaped her identity. Andrea is working with Kate at their new agency, Cutting Edge, when she gets a call about a new case. This new case just happens to be tied to Raphael which only proves to make things more interesting. Throw in some strange snake people and a complex mystery and you have plenty of excitement. All the action is nicely balanced with a bit of humor and romance. I really enjoyed seeing Kate, Curran, and all of the other characters from a different perspective. I think that Andrea is in a unique position to give that perspective because she is close to a lot of the key characters but she still feels and acts like an outsider. Andrea grows a lot as a character over the course of this book and the insight into her background really helps with understanding some of the ways that she looks at the world. Renee Raudman does a fabulous job with this series. It is funny that I didn't really care for her narration for the first couple of books in the series but now I couldn't imagine anyone else. She really is able to perform a wide range of characters very well and with a lot of emotion. She has a very pleasant voice that is easy to listen to for hours at a time. I highly recommend this series to others. This is a series that you do need to read in order since each book builds on the last. This is a very important book in the overall story arc and should not be missed. I can't wait to continue with my re-read of this wonderful series.

Addictive book series. Good story line. Unlike a lot of urban fantasy books the sex is kept to a minimum, enough for the romantic tone and not so much that it gets old.

~ 5 Gunmetal Magic Stars ~  There is just something special about the Andrews team writing that will capture you and take you on an action-packed adventure through the lives and world of their characters. In Gunmetal Magic we get Andrea and Raphael’s story with Kate and Curran making a few short appearances. From what happened in Magic Slays, things are tense between this couple and Andrea is still not sure if she wants to join the Pack. She spends the book finding her place in the world I absolutely loved the development and struggles Andrea goes through. We get to learn about her history (which is sad) and everything that is going on between her and Raphael. The history we learn gives us great insight as to why she is so leery in joining the Pack and we also get to see her finally come to terms with her beast-kin side as the novel develops. The relationship between Andrea and Raphael is officially over or is it? These two are a power couple, both Alphas and both Powerful. They both do a number on each other, but we see how the shapeshifters work through their problems and well the best part was Andreas revenge on Raphael. The secondary characters are just as entreating. I love Barabas. He is such a great character. We also get to learn more about the teenage bouda, Asciano, who starts to play more of a roll. Their is also a Bonus Novella - Magic Gifts, which I love. This novella is in Kate’s POV and is during the same time frame as Gunmetal Magic. I always love return to Kate and Curran. A murder mystery takes place with a kids life in danger. Plus we finally see Kate deal with The Mercenary Guild and she resolve this issue in Grand Style If the book has Ilona Andrews name on it you are guaranteed a extraordinary entertaining read. They are a must read for anyone!
