Gypsy Fire

Fusion has always been a way of life for the gypsies, who are traditional wanderers. These days, musical cross-fertilizations are jet-propelled, but the flamenco fire is seldom extinguished. Flamenco artists can hail from Germany (like Ottmar Liebert) or live in the chilly climes of Canada (like Oscar Lopez). Musically, nouveau flamenco makes new alliances with Latin, rock, or pop and can also consciously reconnect to its Middle Eastern or Indian heritage. These offerings of Gypsy Fire embrace keyboards and polished engineering, and most, like the Strunz & Farah "Nuevo Sol," include electric bass, drum set, and Latin percussion. Ottmar Liebert's "August Moon" conjures pictures of swaying skirts with a seductive cadence of guitar strums, fretless bass, and palmas accents. A snake would relate to the sultry, soft cha-cha of the Ramon Burmudez Group's "A Touch of Love." Things really ignite when the guitar and violin duo of Willie & Lobo light into "Old Molina's Tango"; Chuscales creates an eerie ambience on "Encuentros del Alma"; and a flute shares the guitar stage on Miguel de la Bastide's dramatic "Candela." The gritty quality of dancers' footsteps adds an authentic touch here. Govi, James Bobchak, Energipsy, Jesse Cook, Oscar Lopez, and José Luis Encinas round out this spirited and anguish-free collection.

This collection of consistently lively, rich and sensual numbers features a variety of “New Flamenco” artists. Included are works by Oscar Lopez, Jesse Cook, Ottmar Liebert, Strunz and Farrah, Govi and many more. I’m not sure how this wonderfully Latin music ends up in the New Age section of the CD racks rather than World Music, since it doesn’t sound “New-Agey” at all, but it’s great to listen to regardless of its classification. Consistently compelling, “Gypsy Fire” is my favorite of the Narada “New Flamenco” samplers to date. Other compilations in the series include “Gypsy Soul”, “Gypsy Passion”, “Obsession” and “Flamenco Fire and Grace”.
