During each week of the year a portion of the first five books in the Hebrew Bible, known as the Tenach, is read and that portion is accompanied by a reading of other writings from the rest of the Hebrew Bible. Each second portion chosen, called the Haftorah, is related in some way to the Torah's weekly portion. Sometimes, the connection is hard to follow and often the Haftorah speaks of persons and events that are not well known or understood. Plaut's explanations are divided into four areas. The portion itself, an explanation of the relationship between the Torah and the Haftorah portions, an essay on the Haftorah portion and a last section which suggests additional gleanings or messages from the portions. It is a valuable resource for those whose ability to read Hebrew is limited or nonexistent.
